The galaxy has changed, but Darth Maul’s ambition remains as lethal as ever. On the latest episode of the Temple of Geek Podcast, host Kari was joined by colleagues JJ (aka LadyDragonJJ) and Josh (aka MaceUhWindu) to dive deep into the first two episodes of the highly anticipated Disney+ series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
Set in the turbulent aftermath of The Clone Wars, the series finds Maul on Planet Janix, a corner of the galaxy currently untouched by the Empire’s reach. It is here that Maul begins to weave the threads of a new criminal syndicate, fueled by a singular, burning desire: revenge against Darth Sidious.

A New Kind of Star Wars Story
The podcast crew was quick to praise the show’s distinct tone. While recent hits like Andor have set a high bar for prestige Star Wars, the team discussed how Shadow Lord carves out its own space as a pulpy, high-octane crime thriller.
“It’s like Scarface, but with Maul,” Josh noted, highlighting how the series explores Maul not just as a lapsed Sith, but as a “godfather” figure running a criminal enterprise. The discussion touched on how the show expands the Star Wars universe into different genres, moving from the spy-thriller vibes of Andor to the underground crime grit of Janix.
The Master and the Accidental Apprentice
The emotional core of these first two episodes is the introduction of Devon Izara (voiced by Gideon Adlon), a disillusioned Padawan hiding with her idealistic Master, Eeko-Dio-Daki (Dennis Haysbert).
The team analyzed the fascinating friction between Devon and her Master’s radical pacifism. In an era where the Jedi have been decimated, Devon’s survival instincts lead her to cross paths with Maul in a Janix prison. JJ pointed out the tragic irony of their meeting: “She literally just wanted to get some food for her Master, and now she’s become the ‘elite employee’ of a former Sith Lord.”
The podcast explored the theory that Devon might be the opposite of Ezra, a student that Maul actually succeeds in molding. Kari noted, “Maybe Filoni wants to take her the route that Ezra didn’t take… Maul is actually influencing someone to turn to that dark path.”
The Looming Shadow of Sidious
Though the Emperor has yet to appear on screen, his presence is felt in every cryptic word Maul utters. The crew debated the parasitic nature of the relationship between the two, suggesting that Maul’s drive to build an empire is a subconscious attempt to prove he was the superior apprentice over Anakin Skywalker.
“It’s daddy issues, dude!” JJ joked, while also acknowledging the deeper trauma of a character who was taken as an infant and raised only to be an assassin. This led to a moving discussion on the “burden of knowledge”—knowing Maul’s eventual end in Star Wars Rebels while still being captivated by his current rise to power.
Animation and Voice Acting Excellence
It wouldn’t be a Temple of Geek review without celebrating the craft behind the screen. The team raved about the evolution of the animation style, which stays true to the Clone Wars/Rebels aesthetic while adding a fresh, cinematic edge.
The voice cast also received high marks, particularly:
- Sam Witwer: “He is Star Wars to me,” JJ said, praising Witwer’s enduring passion for the character.
- David W. Collins: The group delighted in the revelation that the “Spybot” is voiced by the veteran actor, making for a mini Force Unleashed reunion with Witwer.
- Vanessa Marshall: The team immediately recognized the voice of Hera Syndulla behind the character Rook Kast, noting that some voices “transcend certain characters.”
What’s Next?
As Maul: Shadow Lord continues its 10-episode run on Disney+, the Temple of Geek crew is strapped in for the journey. With two episodes premiering each week leading up to a May the 4th finale, the stakes for Maul and Devon are only going to get higher.
“I think they’re letting it simmer,” JJ concluded. “Once Devon starts interacting with him and going back and forth between her Jedi teachings and Maul’s influence, it’s going to get very juicy.”
New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premiere every week exclusively on Disney+. Catch the Temple of Geek Podcast next week as we break down episodes three and four!
