During MagicCon Amsterdam, Wizards of the Coast gave us our first detailed look at what the popular trading card game has in store for 2027. During the Preview Panel, the annual show where the next year’s new sets and updates are discussed, they talked about the new in-universe expansions, MagicCon location updates, and so much more. We also got a detailed look at Reality Fracture, the game’s next in-universe setting, coming in October. And for Commander fans, Mystery Boosters are back, but with a Commander twist that is sure to shake the wildly popular format.
We’ve broken down all of the announcements below by topic. If you’re interested in the Reality Fracture reveals, we have a separate breakdown here. And for what you can expect in Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek expansion, we’ve got a breakdown of the November expansion’s first look as well.

Sets Releasing in 2027
2027 sees the release of six mainline sets. Three of them will be in-Universe, detailed below, and three are unannounced Universes Beyond crossover sets. With the inclusion of two of the Infinity Stones in the Marvel Spider-man and Super Heroes sets, it’s a safe bet that at least one of these will be another Marvel expansion. Compared to 2026’s lineup, all three in-Universe expansions will launch with four preconstructed Commander decks. And moving forward, three Magic settings and three Universes Beyond expansions per year is default plan.
Nauctis: The Sunken Realm

Kicking off Magic’s new year is Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. Releasing February 5, this is a fully submerged Plane taking place almost entirely underwater. You can expect traditional Merfolk creatures, and likely many new surprises.
April 9 sees the release of the first Universes Beyond set.
Kamigawa: Titanbreach

On June 4, we see the return of two previous Magic Planes. After the events of March of the Machine, Planes have become unstable and bleed into each other. Ikoria, the lair of behemoths, has merged with Kamigawa, leading to an all-out conflict. This is Magic’s answers to Pacific Rim; massive kaiju-like monsters against giant mechs. Sick.
The next Universes Beyond set drops August 6.
Zhalfir

Zhalfir is somewhat a return to another long-visited Magic setting. This setting is a continent on the plane of Dominaria, the first-ever world depicted in cards in Magic’s history. It’s also the home of the game’s most powerful Planeswalker, both mechanicaly and narratively, Teferi. This releases October 1.
The third and final Universes Beyond set, and final set of the year, comes out November 19.
MagicCon Updates

MagicCons are the biggest Magic events around. Here is where you’ll see the peak of competitive play, the Pro Tour, as well as panels with news, cosplayers, vendors, and, of course, plenty of ways to play Magic. In 2027, we’re getting four MagicCons, with a couple new cities joining the roster. MagicCon Detroit takes place February 26-28, while the event in Tokyo will be held May 14-16. We return to Las Vegas and Amsterdam in 2027, but with shifted dates compared to previous years.
And for fans of Draft and Sealed, the Limited Championship takes place in Minneapolis June 18-20.
Mystery Booster Commander

Mystery Boosters are back, this time with a Commander facelift. The set includes 59 all-new cards made for Commander and are built around the Commander Draft Format. 20 of these new cards are Legendary Creatures, so it’s sure to shake up your Commander nights once they’re out. The biggest change, however, is the new Rulebreaker ability. Seen on Tolabow, Loch Rascal above, it allows you to play certain color cards outside of its color identity. Only eight cards will have the new Rulebreaker ability. These will be available to purchase starting at Gen Con, taking place in Indianapolis July 30 through August 2.
Magic Pro Tour Hall of Fame
We also got confirmation of the return of the Magic Pro Tour Hall of Fame. The program went away after pro player Reid Duke was inducted in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restructuring of the Pro Tour. It’s set to make its return, but details are still minimal on how players qualify and what sort of benefits new membership entails.
