Big Finish announced today, August 9, 2020, that Christopher Eccleston will be returning as the Doctor for their audio dramas. After 15 years, Christopher Eccleston is coming back to reprise his role as the Doctor! Eccleston was cast to play the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 television reboot of Doctor Who. He played the character for one season before leaving the show due to issues with show-runners.
The Ninth Doctor was a character who was gripped by guilt. He was fresh out of a war where he made a terribly difficult choice. His home planet was destroyed. Everyone he loved and cared about was gone. Eccleston brought this character (back) to life in such a fantastic way. Fans have been waiting for what feels like a lifetime for this moment.

So far, there are no details as far as the story-line is concerned. However, fans can pre-order all four volumes from the Big Finish website. Each of the four volumes in Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be released as a 4-disc collector’s edition box set or download containing three brand-new full-cast audio adventures, plus a selection of behind-the-scenes extras.

The love the fans have for their Ninth Doctor
Because Eccleston was the first Doctor to appear on television for the reboot of the series, he holds such a special place in the hearts of fans. For many people, this was their first experience with Doctor Who. The Ninth Doctor was their introduction to the series. He was also the one who brought the series back to older generations who had been fans since the “classic” days (1963-1989).
In February 2020 at Gallifrey One, a Doctor Who fan convention, he saw how truly loved he is. The video clip below is of Eccleston saying he had the happiest of birthdays celebrated at the convention. Also, he says that Gallifrey One is now his favorite convention to attend.
Cosplayers also gathered during Gallifrey One 2020 to show their love of the Ninth Doctor. Cosplay is a creative way to express how much a particular character means to fans. The Ninth Doctor is such a treasure to the Doctor Who fan community.
Needless to say, this announcement is such great news. Fans are very excited to see (actually, to hear!) Christopher Eccleston back as the beloved Ninth Doctor!
