If you aren’t familiar with the broadway musical “In The Heights” yet, you are in for a treat. Originally slated for a June 2020 release, the highly anticipated “In the Heights” feature film has been pushed back to June 2021. The musical is a collaboration between The creator of “Hamilton” Lin-Manuel Miranda and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” Jon Chu.
From Broadway to Hollywood
In the Heights opened on Broadway in 2008 and was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards. The film adaptation will star stars Anthony Ramos (“A Star is Born,” Broadway’s “Hamilton”), Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “BlacKkKlansman”), Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz (Broadway’s “In the Heights”), and Jimmy Smits among others.
“In the Heights” fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music and lyrics with director Jon M.
Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience. Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the musical stage play, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, and concept by Miranda.

This film is being put together by a team of talented musical and entertainment veterans and enthusiasts. Miranda is coming off the success of the musical he created “Hamilton”. Hamilton won 11-Tony Award®-, a GRAMMY Award®-, an Olivier Award- and a Pulitzer Prize. The original Broadway Production is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
Behind the camera, Chu reunited with his “Crazy Rich Asians” production designer, Nelson Coates, and editor, Myron Kerstein. He also collaborated with director of photography Alice Brooks (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and costume designer Mitchell Travers (“Eighth Grade”). Original songs by Miranda. Alex Lacamoire (“Fosse/Verdon”) and Bill Sherman (“Sesame Street”) served as executive music producers. The choreography is by Christopher Scott, who previously teamed with Chu on the award-winning “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.”
Washington Heights on Screen
One thing that is particularly authentic and special about this film is that “In the Heights” was filmed in New York, primarily on location in the dynamic community
of Washington Heights. The trailer release party even took place in Washington Height’s 809 Restaurant & Lounge last December.
“In the Heights.” Slated to open on June 18, 2021, the film will be
distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
“In the Heights” is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive references.
