The Avatar is coming back in a new feature-film

In the months before San Diego Comic-Con, reports and rumors were circulating about what projects might be officially announced. One of these rumors was that Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon would be developing 4 new Avatar movies, theoretically each focusing on a different Avatar. Well, the rumors were correct: Avatar is back.

Janet Varney, who was the voice of Korra and is the host of the “Avatar: Braving the Elements” podcast, exclusively announced that the first of these Avatar Studios films would focus on the “gaang.” Aang, Katara, Zuko, Sokka and Toph are all going to make their way to the big screen. This new chapter of their story will focus on the time between the original series and the time jump that the series closes with. Audiences that were children with the gang will get to watch the story of the group all grown up. This theme falls in the same vein as Toy Story 3 and Incredibles 2. These films were made specifically for the audiences who saw the original films. Adults are getting the same treat with Avatar.

In her video announcement, Varney is reading a Kyoshi novel. Fans have already started speculating that two of the other films will involve both Kyoshi and Korra, one focusing on each of their stories. Korra’s story might pick up where it left off, and Kyoshi’s could really explore anything. These are of course all speculation (and hope).

Much of the original creative team that brought us Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are to be involved with the new projects. Though the original rumors included four new animated films (a rumor the fans will cling to until Avatar Studios freezes over), the confirmed amount of films we are getting is three.

The new film is set to hit theaters in 2024, so get ready to re-watch the original series.
