Big Finish’s 2023 Paul Spragg Memorial Short Trip Opportunity
Entries for Big Finish’s 2023 Paul Spragg Memorial Short Trip Opportunity are now open! In memory of Paul Spragg, a producer’s assistant, podcaster, and editor at Big Finish who sadly passed away in 2014, the company holds a contest for new writers who haven’t gotten a chance to work with them yet.
Big Finish’s Executive Producer Nicholas Briggs explained the competition and its purpose:
“It’s a bittersweet time of year when we announce our annual Paul Spragg Memorial Writers’ Opportunity. There’s the sadness concerning the loss of Paul, who was one of our most valued colleagues, taken from this life at far too young an age. But then there’s the joy of remembering his unswerving dedication to Big Finish and his boundless positivity. Perhaps most importantly, there’s the enthusiastic encouragement he always gave to potential, new contributors — which is the reason why this competition was set up in his name. Here’s to Paul and all the brilliant writers yet to come.”
This year, entrants are asked to submit story ideas for either the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, or Eighth Doctors, and the stories can be set at any point in the Doctor’s life from An Unearthly Child forward. More guidelines- and the previous years’ winners’ audios and scripts- can be found on Big Finish’s website. Entries are due before 11:59 pm (UK time) on June 30th, 2023 and the winning story will be released for free towards the end of this year.
Big Finish Freebies!
Doctor Who audio drama company Big Finish has announced that over the next few months, they will be releasing stories from their back catalog for FREE! Each free episode will only be available for a week to download (though it will remain yours afterwards), but this is a great way for new listeners to discover a range that they may be interested in hearing more from. Listeners only need to create a (free) Big Finish account and download the (free!) Big Finish app.
These episodes will also be accompanied by sales on the releases related to the free story. Though listeners of this podcast will probably hear the news a bit late to take advantage of this week’s free story (as we record on Sundays and this was announced early last week), Big Finish is offering Doctor Who- The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Sphere of Freedom for free alongside a discount of up to 50% off on previous Ninth Doctor stories. The offer for Sphere of Freedom does expire just before midnight UK time on May 14th, but keep an eye out for more freebies from Big Finish soon.
New Trailer and episode names for the 60th Anniversary!
Just before the start of the Eurovision Finals, a new trailer for the upcoming specials celebrating Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary was unveiled! Alongside new footage, the titles of the specials were revealed: “The Star Beast”, “Wild Blue Yonder”, and “The Giggle”.

Interestingly, the trailer does seem to be made up of a lot of our first official look at footage shot in public- from what may be the Doctor and Donna’s first meeting after all these years to Neil Patrick Harris’s character dancing with the Doctor among chaos on the streets.
Much like the teaser trailers pointing to this trailer’s release, there is some “interference” and “glitching” with the footage in parts- specifically in the part of the trailer where Donna asks the Doctor where they are.
Showrunner Russell T Davies had this to say about the trailer’s release:
“The titles are just the beginning of the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet. Autumn is coming, with three hours of danger, Donna, and disaster about to be unleashed!”
New Costumes
After last week’s reveal that Jonathan Groff would be joining the cast of Ncuti Gatwa’s first series as the Doctor, Doctor Who social media have revealed a first look at his character and gorgeous new looks for the Doctor and companion Ruby Sunday. The episode appears to be set in the Regency era. The posts were captioned with the cryptic words “Dress to impress, and beware the Duchess…”
