Episode 3 of Invincible season 2 gives us a slight change of scenery. We spend very little time on earth and more time exploring some things that were set up in season 1. Our friend Allen the alien is back to a disappointing end. The time we do spend on earth is spent dealing with the grief and guilt that comes with being a superhero. Or a superhero’s spouse, as is the case with Debbie Grayson.
We promised no time skips, but episode 3 does catapult us past the summer and into the kids’ freshman year of college. Debbie drops off Mark at college. The boys move into the dorm and Mark and Amber explore adulthood.
Off Earth
We then spend a lot of the episode off of earth entirely. The audience gets to travel to Unopa and see the true aftermath of the Viltrimites. In season 1, the Viltrimites weaken and take over planets, but we don’t ever really see the aftermath of that process. Our alien friend Allen takes us through the galaxy’s journey in fighting the Viltrimites. Allen the alien takes us to his home planet where they are desperately trying to find allies against the Viltrimites. He is sent to find a mole within his own coalition, but the problem, of course, is that the mole is the leader of his planet. He doesn’t get to find out because he is on the brink of death after a confrontation with another planet’s leaders.
One thing this season does really well is the fight scenes. We really love how each fight scene feels like the environment it takes place in. The way the fight scene goes on earth looks different then the way it looks in space or underwater. The animators do a really great job of reflecting where the fight takes place.
Debbie Grayson Back on Earth
We talked about things being more internal this season. That is really shown when Debbie joins a support group for superhero spouses. She meets someone who understands her pain. However, she is overwhelmed with guilt when she finds out that he is the partner of Green Ghost, who was murdered by Omniman. You can see the guilt she is feeling as she struggles to tell her new friend who her partner was. And she really has to struggle with it alone. Now, he doesn’t want to see her again, and her son is away at school. Debbie is all alone to deal with the aftermath of being married to Omniman.
The third episode really kicks the plot up by taking us off planet. We get to see more things from season 1 continue on. And the presence of Omniman is still felt, despite him not appearing on earth yet.
