Amongst the wide range of movies at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), are some delightful and compelling stories told through animation. Here is a list of animated TIFF movies and shorts to look out for this festival.
TIFF is back, taking place September 5 – 15, 2024 for its 49th edition. 11 days of Canadian and international cinema, special events, and talks with some of the biggest names in film.
Can I Get a Witness
Can I Get a Witness is an animated TIFF movie that is blend of live-action and animation. It tells a story set of a mother (Sandra Oh) and daughter (Keira Jang) in the near future when technology and travel are almost completely banned. Also, nobody is allowed to live past age 50.
The Wild Robot
Featuring the voices of Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Lupita Nyong’o, Stephanie Hsu, and Bill Nighy, this DreamWorks Animation sci-fi adventure follows a robot designed to assist humans. She finds herself stranded on an island populated exclusively by beasts. The Wild Robot is an epic tale of survival, in which animals and machines must question their programming and embrace their hidden strengths.
Flow
A wondrous journey through realms natural and mystical, Flow follows a courageous cat after his home is devastated by a great flood. Teaming up with a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog to navigate a boat in search of dry land, they must rely on trust, courage, and wits to survive the perils of a newly aquatic planet.
Inkwo for When the Starving Return (Short)
Two lifetimes from now, the world hangs in the balance. Dove is a young, enigmatic, gender-shifting warrior. They discover the gifts and burdens of their Inkwo (medicine) to defend against an army of hungry, ferocious monsters. Dove’s courage, resilience, and alliance with the Earth culminates in a battle against these flesh-consuming creatures. They become stronger with each body and soul they devour. Inkwo for When the Starving Return is an animated TIFF short as well as a call to action to fight and protect against the forces of greed around us.
Maybe Elephants (Short)
In the ’70s, three rebellious teenage daughters, a restless mother, a father struggling with potatoes, and maybe some elephants, find themselves in bustling Nairobi. The family will never be the same. Created by Oscar®-winning animator Torill Kove, Maybe Elephants is a playful and loving autobiographical homage to family, adolescence, and the therapeutic power of memories, however unreliable.
