HBO released the first teaser trailer and art for “The Last of Us” season 2 as part of a ‘The Last of Us Day’ celebration on September 26 — the day the cordyceps infection took over the world.

Based on the Naughty Dog video game of the same name, season 1 of “The Last of Us” broke the HBO record for most-watched debut season when it premiered in the first half of 2022. Season 2, which will cover events from “The Last of Us: Part II”, takes place five years after the end of season 1 and will air sometime in 2025.

After returning to the safe settlement of Jackson for some semblance of peace in a world turned upside down, Joel and Ellie find their pasts catching up to them. Amidst heartbreak, loss, and fear beyond anything they’ve faced before, the duo are forced to reckon with everything they’ve left behind.

Season two sees the return of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel Miller and Ellie Williams, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Joining the cast are Kaitlyn Dever as Abby Anderson, Isabela Mercer as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Jeffrey Wright will play Isaac, the character he voiced for “The Last of Us: Part II”, and Catherine O’Hara will also guest star in a currently unknown role.

HBO also released 3 official art pieces by Greg Ruth for season 2. Taking the silhouette form of Ellie’s arm tattoo, there is a piece each for Joel, Ellie and Abby. Those who have played the game know well who Abby is and why she’s centered alongside the two main character. Those who haven’t will just have to wait and see. Trust us when we say it’s worth it.
