Temple of Geek’s Maddie Morrow sat down with the influential comedian, voice actor, and writer Brandon Rogers to discuss the rise of adult animation and the change in how the genre is perceived. Rogers, a foundational figure in internet comedy, has successfully made the jump to writing and acting in major animated projects like Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.
The Phenomenon of Adult Animation
Brandon Rogers is the voice of Blitzø in Helluva Boss and a co-writer alongside Vivienne Medrano. Not only that, Rogers is also the voice of Katie Killjoy in Hazbin Hotel. His experience in the world of adult animation gives fans an in-depth idea of how important this genre has become.
The massive success of the Hellaverse, which includes Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, points to a significant cultural shift in how animation is perceived and consumed. Brandon Rogers argued that this phenomenon is a natural and healthy progression for the art form. He explained that animation, at its inception, was very infantile and made for children. As generations grew up with it, the medium evolved and began to address older audiences.
Animation in, in its birth, was very infantile, made for children… I think we’re realizing that cartoons, animation, they’re not just for children anymore. And I think Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, shows like that, really are kind of the next step in making animation more legitimate for adults.
Rogers believes that adult animation is taking itself more seriously with each passing decade. He compared the current status of these shows to a visually clever product: “It’s like the Trixie Mattel makeup of entertainment. That shit looks like it’s for kids, but it’s really good quality.”

Similarly, shows like Hazbin Hotel might look like Disney at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, they reveal themselves to feature “horny queers” and “violent” content, confirming their adult focus. Rogers strongly believes that animation is a beautiful art form that shouldn’t be confined to children, asserting that to do so suggests it’s an art form one must eventually grow out of. He expressed his hope that in the coming decades, animation will continue to evolve and take itself even more seriously as a legitimate medium for mature storytelling.
