A Look Into ‘Dragons – Recipes From The Isle of Berk’

“If you wanna gain a dragon’s trust, to befriend and train them, and it’s a great idea to feed them too!” – Fishlegs Ingerman

With the holiday season here, what better time than now to bring something new and tasty to the table? Dragons – Recipes From The Isle of Berk offers a large variety of over 45 recipes. It prides itself on being a book of feasts, drinks, desserts … and dragons.’ The book encourages novice food lovers to join the culinary fun, as seen in past Insight Edition Cookbooks. Dragons also spans over more than 145 pages of recipes, lore, and fun.

Beyond the slick dustcover is a beautiful hardback cover, protecting the recipes compiled from the Isle of Berk. The illustrations are homey, with delicious, freshly made food easily imaginable within a loving village.

How To Train Your Culinary Skills

The cooking journey through Berk begins with a Foreword authored by Chief Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. It was delightfully written and sets the tone for dedication and warmth within the art of cooking. In Dragons – Recipes From The Isle of Berk, recipes range in difficulty and complexity. However, instructions were not only easy to follow, but also offered insight into life as a Viking in Berk. The book also features a glossary of kitchen and recipe terms, as well as a “Cooking with Fire” section. The section breaks down recipes when a specific dish is needed.

Some recipes are accompanied by entries from the Ingerman Rating System. This System assigns a rating to each dish on its Creaminess, Crispiness, Variability, Sweetness, Decorativeness, and Stackability, among other factors. “Dragon Stats” and Viking doodles can also be found among the pages, making this book a real addition for dragon lovers.

Recipes throughout the pages include a variety of breakfast items, stews and salads, sauces, appetizers, main dishes, drinks, and desserts. At the back of the book, a helpful Dietary Considerations list can be found. Almost every dish can be modified to be Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, or Dairy-free.

Our Time In The Kitchen

As someone who enjoys hearty breakfast meals, I felt a calling to ‘Hiccup’s Harmless Porridge With Berries and Butter’. With a finish time of 35 minutes, it makes for a great meal on a regular workday. This recipe adds a unique twist to traditional porridge dishes with the addition of honey, frozen blueberries, and a finishing touch of butter.

The recipe offers dairy-free and vegan alterations by using plant-based butter and milk.

Closing Thoughts

“When something changes your life for the better, you include it in your life as much as possible – from Dragon Races to exploring new worlds to helping cook meals in the longhouse. It’s the Berkian way!” – Chief Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

Recipes vary in preparation and finishing time, with main dishes taking up to six hours to complete. Unfortunately, the recipes do not include a quick Time reference, unlike other Insight cookbooks. This book features non-alcoholic drinks great for those cozy occasions.

Some of my other favorite recipes from this book include Astrid’s Yaknog, Berkian Creamy Cod and Potato Stew! There’s something for everyone – picky eaters and sweet-tooths included – making this a great addition to your kitchen.

Thank you, Insight Editions, for this book to review!
