Anime Expo is well known for how friendly it is to cosplayers. As far as conventions go has one of the most comprehensive sets of activities to engage cosplayers. No matter how you choose to participate, cosplay is a big part of the Anime Expo experience.
Events you can find at Anime Expo that center cosplayers
- Cosplay Gatherings: Cosplay Gatherings are organized by attendees and are a great way to meet people from the same fandom and take some amazing photos together. There are nine approved cosplay gathering locations, all of which are located outside of the convention center.
- Cosplay Repair Center: If your cosplay needs a little TLC, the Cosplay Repair Center is the place to go. They have a team of experienced seamstresses and tailors who can help you fix any problems with your costume.
- Cosplay Senpai: The Cosplay Senpai are a group of experienced cosplayers who are available to answer questions, give advice, and help you out with your cosplay. They can be found in the Entertainment Hall.
- Cosplay Contest: The AX Masquerade is the highlight of the cosplay weekend. This is a chance for cosplayers to show off their skills and compete for prizes. The Masquerade is held on Saturday night in the Main Events Hall.
- Cosplay Photosets: Find the perfect backdrop that matches your cosplay among the 10+ sets that you can choose from. First introduced in 2013, these professionally-built sets represent a broad range of themes.
- Cosplay Photoshoots: There are many opportunities to take professional-quality photos of your cosplay at Anime Expo. You can take your own photos in the designated photo areas, or you can hire a professional photographer to capture your memories. The cosplay gathering areas tend to add a fun backdrop for photos.
- Cosplay Workshops: AX offers several workshops that can help you improve your cosplay skills. These workshops cover topics such as sewing, prop making, makeup, and wig styling.
In addition to the listed activities, there are many other ways to enjoy cosplay at Anime Expo. You can walk around the convention center and admire costumes, or participate in panels and discussions.

Cosplay is not Consent
No matter how friendly a convention is to cosplayers it doesn’t stop the harassment that cosplayers often face at these events. Con organizers litter the convention with signs that say “Cosplay is Not Consent”.
Always ask permission before taking a photo, for example, do not take suggestive photos of a cosplayer, their backside, or any side if the cosplayer is not aware. As a general rule, you should not touch a cosplayer or their costume. Even if it’s just to admire it. This helps ensure that everyone feels safe and respected.
If you see or experience anything that makes you uncomfortable, please report it to a staff member, volunteer, or security guard. AX has a zero-tolerance policy for abuse and harassment, and we will take any necessary action to ensure the safety of their guests.
