Brand ambassador builds looks based on fandom ‘big three’

Mariah Carley (@mariahcarleyy) is something of an expert when it comes to assembling elegant outfits based on her fandom big three: Star Wars, Marvel, and DC Comics.

The brand ambassador’s geek fashion journey started when she began thrifting “old clothes and making them look new.”

“Then I started styling my geeky shirts and giving them a geeky/modern edge,” she said. “Pairing them with the right shoe can elevate a look!”

What are your diehard fandoms?

My diehard fandoms are my big three: Star Wars, Marvel, and DC Comics

How would you describe your personal geek style?

My style is flexible to fit whichever mood I’m in; whether it’s a vintage throwback, a glamour look, or more casual streetwear. My biggest style and life influencer is Ashley Eckstein. The past year, I have been fortunate enough to work with the company Her Universe, and I pull a lot of inspiration of style from the geek girl community.

What favorite geek fashion items can be found in your closet?

I have a growing collection of vintage-inspired Star Wars t-shirts from small businesses I’ve found on Instagram. I typically don’t use a lot of accessories in my outfits, my biggest accessory is my hair!

Describe your go-to geeky outfit.

Due to the pandemic, I find myself wearing a lot of leggings and oversize geeky graphic t-shirts. With summertime coming, I love biker shorts with a pair of white “dad” sneakers. When asked to model for brands, I typically try to keep things simple to let the focus be on the product, and hopefully, other fans can get style inspiration.

Where do you find yourself searching or shopping the most for your geek fashion needs?

I shop a lot online, Her Universe, BoxLunch, and Junk Food Clothing. I also love independent shops; Fantasy Feelings and @shopfridayapparel have amazing Star Wars and Disney collections.

Feel free to shout out any personal geeky passions, projects, or business endeavors:

I’m constantly working on new content! I recently joined my first podcast with other geek girls I met through the community, called Forces of Fandom — a podcast that celebrates all fandoms. Our first episode debuts soon!
