Captain Marvel Movie Review

Captain Marvel has hit theaters and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Released on International Women’s Day, Captain Marvel is the newest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s a welcome addition to an already amazing story. We get to see the characters we loved. We also get new characters to fall in love with. Most of all we get a bit of backstory from a lot of characters we’ve gotten to know since 2008.

So with the much-anticipated release of Captain Marvel, how does it fit into the already established Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let’s to a ride into space and dig in deep.

There will be NO spoilers in this review

Captain Marvel is the story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and how she rediscovers herself. Donning her Kree Star Force uniform, Captain Marvel is a member of the alien race, the Kree. The Kree are at war with another alien race called the Skrulls who are shapeshifters who can take the form of anyone on a molecular level. During the aftermath of a battle between the alien races, Carol Danvers crash lands in Los Angeles in the year 1996. The film goes on to show Carol’s new adventure on Earth as she struggles to find where she fits in with the Kree and her mysterious past and even more mysterious powers.

The cast of Captain Marvel is amazing. Brie Larson embodies the spirit that is Carol Danvers and is a delight to watch on screen. Samuel L Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury who is now himself with 2 eyes in the mid-nineties. Ben Mendelson comes in as Talos, leader of the Skrulls with an amazingly awesome performance with great on-screen chemistry with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Jude Law, who we all thought was going to be Mar-vell comes in as Yon-Rogg, who for those familiar with the comics, plays a pivotal role in how Carol Danvers gets her powers. Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace return as the Kree: Korath and Ronan the Accuser, respectively. Both Hounsou and Pace are reprising their roles from Guardians of the Galaxy and are playing their younger selves. Clark Gregg also returns as Phil Coulson in his rookie year at SHIELD. Rounding out the cast are Gemma Chan, Lashana Lynch, and Annette Bening as Minn-Erva, Maria Rambeau and Dr. Wendy Lawson, respectively.

The acting in Captain was fun to watch. Everyone in the film easily looked like they were having a blast on set and that made the movie that much better. Also, I enjoyed how typical tropes for women lead characters were abandoned in this film. This is a Captain Marvel movie and it’s the Captain Marvel movie that her fans deserve.

I think what I enjoyed most about Captain Marvel is a line towards the end of the movie, where Carol Danvers, fully aware of who she is says straight to her enemy’s face that she doesn’t have to prove anything to him. Which is a very important lesson for everyone who has to face gatekeepers or feel like they have to find validation from others. You don’t. The true message in Captain Marvel is that once you figure out ho it is you want to be, don’t let anyone else’s idea of who you should matter to you. Be your own hero. Be awesome.

Should you go see Captain Marvel? Absolutely!!! You should definitely go see it if you’re going to have an opinion on it. This writer found it awesome and it also did the job when it comes to tying things together in the already vast MCU. I can’t wait to see what happens next and I definitely can’t wait to see more of Captain Marvel.
