Critical Role Campaign 4 Sets The Stage For An Ambitious Story In The Rich World Of Aramán

Campaign 4 is an incredibly strong introduction to a new chapter in Critical Role. Brennan Lee Mulligan once again proves his amazing acuity as a collaborative storyteller. His prose infuses the world of Aramán with life. His ability to forge a world that feels vast, lived in, and rich from the jump is endlessly impressive.

Mulligan instantly immerses the audience and players into the scene with a cold open. Liam O’Brien and Luis Carazo join him at the table. Their character’s strong connection to Thjazi Fang instantly raises the stakes. Thjazi is the catalyst for not just this episode but the campaign as a whole. Marked for death, he seems to be at the center of a larger conspiracy, or perhaps more than one.

Unable to save him, his allies slowly come together at the table, sparking questions. Each cast member brings a unique character to life at the table, instantly infusing them with pathos and depth. Matt Mercer stands out as a particularly nasty individual as Sir Julien Davinos. While on the opposite end, Whitney Moore steals scenes as the hilariously charming and chaotic Tyranny, a demon who misses nearly every social cue.

Every introduction is memorable, as each cast member captures a completely different energy through their performance. However, Laura Bailey as Thimble may have the most shocking, as she fights for her life before even speaking a word. The intensity of her introduction is elevated even further by the sheer fierceness of the emotion she portrays.

Bringing the characters together through a traumatic tragedy strips many of them bare of pretense immediately. It highlights those that seem to be hiding something or showing contempt for the man laid out on the table. The specificity of details paints the picture of Aramán beautifully, even through elements that are yet to be explained. The severity of the world feels reminiscent of Mulligna’s “EXU: Calamity” trilogy.

While this is not an action-heavy or dice-heavy episode, it is an excellent introduction to the world and characters. Much about Aramán remains a mystery, but elements like the political intrigue, institutional corruption, and impact of the Gods deaths are immediately felt. Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, and Moore seem particularly intrigued by the implications of the Gods being dead based on their characters.

Thjazi Is The Catalyst That Sets Off The Larger Story

Where some mourn the loss of the Gods others search for something else to fill the void left by their demise. The larger mystery of Thjazi’s death and failed rescue touches a number of characters, revealing those involved in the plot. This could be the simmering start of the seekers table. Throughout the episode players join and leave the table as is appropriate for the moment. These changes flow harmoniously and are reminiscent of following multiple plotlines through characters in any television series.

Campaign 4 of Critical Role will split the 13 cast members into three tables. The seekers, the schemers, and the soldiers. While this episode doesn’t explicitly initiate these differentiations, it does begin to lay the breadcrumbs. Certain characters are soldiers or were in the past, some are searching for the truth about Thjazi, while others seem to have a more Machiavellian mentality.

The art and set design are gorgeous and instantly transport viewers into the tone and world of Aramán. Nearly every character is connected to at least one other beyond Thjazi Fang. The relationships span from familial, former comrades in arms, business associates, to antagonistic.

Brennan Lee Mulligan & The Cast Bring Aramán To Life

Critical Role Campaign 4

Mulligan had a monumental task with this episode. He had to introduce the world of Aramán without drowning the audience in exposition. Each character needed to be introduced without overwhelming the audience or the players. He also needed to set the stage for multiple potential storylines that will seamlessly split the tables in a way that feels natural.

The cast needed to introduce characters in a way that feels natural. Setting them each apart from one another. Embodying them in a way that feels lived in, established, and authentic. They also needed to portray these long-standing relationships in a way that feels real.

On every count they succeeded in their ambitious tasks. Mulligan and the entire cast trust the audience to immerse themselves in this world. Many elements aren’t fully explained, with numerous houses and details quickly and briefly introduced. But this is done in a way that is standard to the high fantasy genre, reminiscent of “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings.” Aramán is full of dangers and mysteries with characters to match.

Campaign 4 Captures The Charm Of Critical Role While Elevating It

However, the charm of Critical Role remains. Moore, Riegel, and Aabria Iyengar often bring moments of levity through comedy. It is delivered in a way that may cut the tension, but it doesn’t diminish the stakes or tone. Campaign 4 continues to bring the feeling of dear friends telling a story together, as Critical Role has for the past ten years.

But Critical Role continues to up their game at every turn. The premiere of Campaign 4 is the perfect start to this next installment in Critical Role’s story and an excellent point for new viewers to jump in. This is only the first episode, but it beautifully introduces the world of Aramán and the characters at the center of this story. The stage has been set for an epic high fantasy tale.

Critical Role Campaign 4 is available now on Beacon. It rebroadcasts on Twitch Friday, October 3rd at 9am Pacific. The episode will be available on Video on Demand on YouTube on Monday, October 6th at 12pm Pacific.
