D23 2017 Recap – The Big Announcements From The Disney Event

2017 brought us perhaps the biggest D23 to date, with huge announcements and record breaking crowds.  Here’s a brief recap of all the big announcements.

FILMS

TOY STORY 4 – Scheduled for release on June 21st 2019, John Lasseter was expected to be back in the directing chair for the fourth Toy Story. However it was announced that he would not return and Josh Cooley would be at the helm.

THE SPEED TEST – The animation panel started with a short film “The Speed Test”.  The film showcased two planes racing each other only to be beat out by a third plane, maybe it’s “Cars”… but with planes?  Release date April 12th, 2019.

WRECK IT RALPH 2: RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET –  This sequel will introduce a new character voiced by Taraji P. Henson and include all the Disney Princesses.  Release date November 21st, 2018.

COCO – Based a young boy stealing a guitar that transports him to the “Land of the Dead”.  Release date has been set for November of this year.

OLAF’S FROZEN ADVENTURE – This will be paired with “Coco” as a spin-off featurette.

 

THE UNTITLED PIXAR FILM THAT TAKES YOU TO A SUBURBAN FANTASY WORLD – That is not the official title, but it was the one that it has been given from writer-director Dan Scanlon.  The premise will follow two elves as they spend the day attempting to spend one final day with their lost fathers.  No release date was given.

THE INCREDIBLES 2 – The sequel we’ve all been waiting for is finally a reality.  The film will have all returning cast members, those in attendance got a sneak peek at some new footage.  Release date June 15th 2018.

A WRINKLE IN TIME – With a stellar cast including Oprah Winfrey, this epic film is guaranteed to stun. Release date March 9, 2018

DUMBO, ALADDIN, THE LION KING, AND THE JUNGLE CRUISE – Disney is continuing with their live action films taken from some of their most iconic animation films.  Dumbo will be directed by Tim Burton, Guy Ritchie will remake Aladdin, Jon Favreau takes on Lion King, and Dwayne Johnson stars in The Jungle Cruise.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – Cast members were treated to a behind the scenes video and cast members were on hand to take about the film… but not really talk about it.  Release date December 15, 2017.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – Cast members were on hand for this big announcement.  Attendees were treated to some footage as well as the first look at the Infinity Gauntlet.  We expect more to be released this week at San Diego Comic Con.  Release date May 4, 2018.

DISNEY PARKS

STAR WARS LAND – Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is set to open in 2019, first in Anaheim then in Orlando. Expect roaming cast members, a cantina bar, life sized ships, etc.

DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE – The Guardians of the Galaxy will soon be joined by the Avengers and Spider-man.   The park will be getting a super-hero themed upgrade, no date has been given. The famous pier will now be known as Pixar Pier in 2018, and a limited-time Pixar Fest is coming as well.

DISNEY WORLD – Toy Story Land is under construction and set to open Summer 2018.  Disney World is also getting a new Skyliner, giving a birds-eye view of the park.  The Magic Kingdom Park, is getting it’s own Kansas City inspired Willis Theatre.  Epcot center is getting a new space themed restaurant, promised to give the feeling that you are eating up in space. A Tron themed ride, Guardians of the Galaxy, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and Ratatouille rides are also scheduled to be built for 2021.  Perhaps the biggest announcements for Disney World is they are getting a Star Wars themed completely interactive hotel.  Think of Westworld but for Star Wars.  And Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is coming.  A Star Wars themed land is on way for 2019!

DISNEYLAND PARIS – Paris is getting a New York inspired hotel filled with Marvel characters.
