NERDBOT hosted their fourth annual Anime Pasadena over the weekend of November 19th and 20th. This year, there was an incredible voice actor guest list. Among those voice actors was Dan Woren. We spoke with Dan about his voice acting experiences.

Interview with Dan Woren

Dan Woren is a voice actor who has voiced a number of anime characters. These include Byakuya Kuchiki in Bleach, Caster in Fate/Zero, and Saito Hajime in Rurouni Kenshin.

With Bleach returning after eight years, we asked Dan how it felt to return as the stoic captain of Squad 6, Byakuya. He said:

Short story: Great, phenomenal, awesome. When I found out for sure that I was going to be doing it—because nobody knew for sure if we were coming back—I immediately had to dive back and listen to other stuff I had done as Byakuya. Just to make sure I didn’t do it wrong. I found out that, yeah, I can still do the voice. Yeah, I think I got a clue. Okay, good. That’s awesome.

Dan also spoke about Byakuya’s poignant relationships with his lieutenant, Renji Abarai, and his adoptive sister, Rukia Kuchiki. He had a very thoughtful look at his character’s interactions.

I think they’re real. There’s always something going on in the relationship. There is that level of reality. It’s not just a cartoon. That dichotomy of love and frustration is captured really well.

To hear Dan Woren as Byakuya in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, watch the dub on Hulu, dropping every Friday.
