‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ Ending Explained

Is the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora) still evil at the end of Descendants: The Rise of Red? Does altering one villain’s story change not only the villains, but also our favorite prince and princess’s story too? In Descendants tradition, the ending is left open ended.

As Maddox (Leonardo Nam) warns Red (Kylie Cantrall) at the beginning of the movie, “When you alter the fabric of time, there can be some unpredictable consequences.”

The fourth installment of the “Descendants” franchise released on Disney+ on July 12. The story follows Uma (China Anne McClain), now principal of Auradon Prep, and new characters starting the school year. Uma opens its doors to all Villain Kids. She extends an invite to the school to another VK – Red, Princess of Wonderland.

The Queen of Hearts and Cindrella see each other for the first time in decades.

The Queen of Hearts, whose resentment against Auradon has never wavered, seizes the opportunity to incite a coup. When Cinderella (Brandy, reprising her 1997 role) tries to make her see reason, her life is threatened. Red must team up with Cinderella’s daughter, Chloe (Malia Baker), as they adventure through time to find out what moment turned her mom into a villain.

Note: Warning Descendants: The Rise of Red spoilers ahead.

Before She Was The Queen of Hearts

Red has spent her life wanting the freedom to be who she is. Red and Chloe work together to discover exactly what brought them to Merlin Academy. If they can stop what happens to Bridget (Ruby Rose Turner) before she turns into the Queen of Hearts, maybe they can save their future.

They discover that not only was Bridget really nice, but also that she and Ella (Morgan Dudley) were best friends. When she was a teenager at Merlin Academy, she was humiliated by Uliana (Dara Reneé) at Castle-coming. This essentially leads her down the path of evil. Chloe learns from Ella that always following the rules and playing fair don’t always apply to those who aren’t royalty.

Hades, Maleficent, Uliana and Hook take the cookbook from Red and Chloe
DESCENDANTS: THE RISE OF RED – (Disney/Quantrell Colbert) ANTHONY PYATT, MARS, DARA RENEE, JOSHUA COLLEY

They believe the only way to stop the Queen of Hearts’ coup in the present day, and save Cinderella’s life, they must find out what Uliana, Hades (Anthony Pyatt), Hook (Joshua Colley), Maleficent (Mars), and Morgie (Peder Lindell) have planned and stop it from happening. They discover her plan to use a forbidden cookbook to create her perfect revenge, so they intend to steal it first. Getting the cookbook from Merlin’s office was more difficult than they originally thought, but they are victorious.

Uliana, Hades, Hook, and Maleficent take the book from Red. The moment they open it, they are frozen in place unable to move thanks to the enchantment Merlin(Jeremy Swift) placed on the book. When Merlin finds them frozen he lets them know they will be spending years and years in detention. Morgie is able to escape without receiving punishment as he was on lookout.

Is The Queen of Hearts Still Evil? The Consequences of Time Travel

Red is worried that even if they stopped Uliana, then her mother could still be evil when they go back. Red and Chloe return back to Auradon and the events at the beginning of the film start to play out. However, this time the Queen of Hearts releases magical heart bubbles in the air. When she turns, her dress is still red on the outer layer while the middle in the front is almost white. More of a blush pink, like her younger self.

It is implied to the audience that this Queen of Hearts is a new version of herself and is no longer evil. Cinderella is also safe and alive and greets Chloe warmly. The consequences for messing with the fabric of time could be greater than either Red or Chloe could ever imagine.

Will There Be A Descendants: The Rise of Red Sequel?

The ending of this story is pleasant. It still feels as if we’re missing the full picture of just what happened to the Bridget at Castle-coming that turned her into the Queen of Hearts. If the Queen of Hearts is no longer evil, does that mean she is no longer a villain? If Ella is grounded, do she and Prince Charming still fall in love? Since Uliana and the other VKs got caught, did the prank against Bridget never happen?

There are still so many questions within the plot that need answers. We know the rest of the cast has spoken since the movie has been released about possibly returning to fix what they did. Everyone would love to bring these characters back.

Could Disney+ making an announcement for Descendants 5 at D23 Expo 2024? Fans will have to wait and see.
