Hispanic Audiences Drove New Line’s ‘La Llorona’ To $26.5M Easter Weekend B.O. Win
The combination of a late Easter and many rival films dodging this release time to avoid box office heavy hitter, Avengers: Endgame, paved the way for $9M James Wan horror movie, The Curse of La Llorona, to beat out its own tracking with a $26.5M weekend win largely built on Hispanic audiences turning up at 49%. The premise is rooted in authentic superstition, so the timing couldn’t be better: opening a genre pic with copious Catholic iconography on the holiest weekend of the year seems to have paid off for New Line Studios.

‘See You Yesterday’ Trailer: Teens Hope To Undo A Police Shooting In Netflix Sci-Fi Film From Spike Lee’s Protégé:
The original film short that inspired this Netflix-produced, feature-length vehicle was an HBO Short Film competition finalist at the American Black Film Festival (and can currently be viewed on Cinemax’s Max Go). Shadow and Act reviewed the short previously: “Despite its short runtime, See You Yesterday is electrifying (literally). It encompasses issues of police brutality and the innate desire that all humans have to return to the past with the opportunity to do things differently. The teens’ frantic determination as they race against time is visceral.”
After premiering at Tribeca on May 3, Netflix will release See You Yesterday on May 17. Check out the trailer, it really will make you want to see the whole movie.

Nintendo Bans Trans Flag From Smash Bros.’ Stage Builder, Calling It a “Political Statement”:
When Nintendo included a stage builder in the latest update of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which allowed players to build and share their own creations, naturally players populated the game with swastikas, and lewd and 9/11-themed images. Moderators were quick to flag these, but, in addition to the hateful content, mods also reportedly deleted a stage featuring a transgender flag.

‘Song of the South’ Won’t Appear On Disney+, ‘Dumbo’ Will Be Edited To Remove Scene With Crows:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Song of the South, Disney’s 1946 film set in the south during the 1800’s, will remain in the Disney vault and won’t appear on Disney+, after all (there was some confusion due to earlier statements by Disney head Bob Iger). Dumbo, however, will stream on Disney+, but a scene featuring a crow named Jim Crow will be cut from the streaming release.
