“Doctor Who” welcomes a new member to the TARDIS Team: John Bishop

Today the New Year’s episode of Doctor Who aired. Just after it’s airing in the United Kingdom, it was announced that the Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker) and her traveling companion Yaz (Mandip Gil) would be joined by a new friend. Actor and comedian John Bishop joins the cast of Doctor Who as Dan.  Check out the first look video below.

John Bishop joins the TARDIS

In the video, Dan is loading up a white truck as a friend reads him his horoscope. His horoscope reads “Aries, surprises lie in store this year. The color blue will be important and the letter D. Your lucky number is 13. Be prepared for action. And whatever hurdles come your way, just remember it’s not the end of the world.”

In the new season, Dan will find himself tangled up in the Doctor’s adventures. He will quickly learn there’s more to the Universe(s) than he could ever believe. Traveling through space and time alongside the Doctor and Yaz, he’ll be facing off with face evil alien races. Speaking about joining the show, John said, “If I could tell my younger self that one day I would be asked to step on board the TARDIS, I would never have believed it. It’s an absolute dream come true to be joining Doctor Who and I couldn’t wish for better company than Jodie and Mandip.”

Showrunner for Doctor Who discuss the process of bring John Bishop aboard

Chris Chibnall, Showrunner talked about what the process of bringing John Bishop aboard the TARDIS has been like. He stated, “It’s time for the next chapter of Doctor Who, and it starts with a man called Dan. Oh, we’ve had to keep this one secret for a long, long time. Our conversations started with John even before the pandemic hit. The character of Dan was built for him, and it’s a joy to have him aboard the TARDIS.”

Matt Strevens, Executive Producer BBC Studios, said, “It’s been a total joy having John join the cast and we’ve been having a lot fun on set already. We can’t wait for you to meet Dan when the show returns later this year.”

“Revolution of the Daleks”

The Thirteenth Doctor will kick-off 2021 with an action-packed episode entitled “Revolution of the Daleks,” set to air on BBC AMERICA on New Year’s Day – Friday, January 1st at 8pm ET/PT.

The holiday special will see a host of exciting guest stars including John Barrowman MBE, who will be reprising his role as Captain Jack Harkness, alongside Chris North as Jack Robertson. Dame Harriet Walter will also be making her Doctor Who debut for the special, alongside television star Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.

At the end of season 12 the Thirteenth Doctor at the end of season 12  was locked away in a high-security alien prison. In the New Year’s Day special, Yaz, Ryan and Graham are on Earth. They are forced to carry on with their lives without her. However, they soon discover a disturbing plan forming. A plan which involves a Dalek.
