The Arrival of the Empire and the Shadow of Marrok
The most palpable change in these episodes is the arrival of the Empire, specifically marked by the presence of the Inquisitor Marrok. His introduction brings a chilling level of intimidation to the screen, particularly in an interrogation room scene that JJ describes as one of the scariest Star Wars scenes ever witnessed. The visual of scratches on a table, implying a brutal interrogation of Chief Klais, serves as a haunting indicator of the Empire’s ruthlessness.

Unlike battles involving seasoned Jedi, seeing an Inquisitor confront a civilian police captain creates a terrifying new dynamic. The hosts note that Marrok feels far more intimidating here than in previous appearances, such as in Ahsoka, because the protagonists he faces lack the Force abilities to easily defend themselves. After spending four episodes warning others about the dangers of Imperial involvement, Commander Brander Lawson is finally proven right, though it is a victory lap he likely wished he never had to take.
The Complexity of Brander Lawson
Commander Brander Lawson, voiced by Wagner Moura, is emerging as a standout, well-rounded character. Caught between the sewers of the criminal underworld and the large shadow of the Empire, Lawson is portrayed not as a typical hero or villain, but as a man desperately trying to navigate an impossible situation to protect his son.

The episodes reveal more about his personal life, including his ideological differences with his ex-wife, Drea Lawson, who works for the Empire. Lawson finds himself in the precarious position of harboring Jedi, specifically Master Daki and Devon Izara, a situation his son discovers when he finds them chilling at their dining table. A charged interaction between Lawson and casino owner Solrena hints at a deep, possibly romantic or life-saving history that even his son notices.
Maul: The Eponymous Shadow
Interestingly, a minor critique noted by JJ is the lack of screen time for the titular character, Maul. However, this may be a deliberate narrative choice, living up to his title as the “Shadow Lord” by remaining in the background while the ripple effects of his plots force other characters into difficult positions.
