Fans of Eternals were surprised that the actress is deaf

In the viral video is of actress Lauren Ridloff being interviewed on the red carpet of the World Premiere for Eternals in Los Angeles, CA, she discusses her excitement over being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

An interpreter narrates as Ridloff excitedly talks to reporters about her role in the film “It’s such a thrill to be able to take space in the MCU as a person who is deaf, a woman, a person of color, all of that. I mean, excuse me, I have arrived.”

The Instagram post by Temple of Geek now has over four million views, half a million likes, and more than 800 comments, about which we are chuffed! The comments and the support from fans are stunning, especially seeing the joy that fans have for this actress and character. Scrolling through the comments, we noticed that the majority of the reactions ranged from loving the character of Makarri and Ridloff’s role on The Walking Dead to her astounding dress sported on the red carpet of the premier as well as the representation of a Black, deaf actor.

Our favorite comments came from knowing that the actress was representing her own personhood, rather than just playing the role of a deaf superhero. We saw and loved the importance of an on-screen representation of people with disabilities. Fans were quick to point out a young fan that is seen using signing language and pointing to the photo of Makkari in the background of the video.

Reactions to Lauren Ridloff’s red carpet look

When the video took off on Instagram, we noticed that fans expressed their matching excitement for Ridloff in the MCU. The comments that came up most often were comments about what a great character Makkari is. There was a lot of talk about her red carpet outfit. BLACKPINK’s Rosé wore the same outfit for the Met Gala, a Saint Laurent dress,  Anthony Vaccarello’s little black dress, and a crystalized choker covered in lacquered four-leaf clovers.
