The Expanse has just been renewed for a 5th season on Amazon Prime Video ahead of its season 4 premiere. Here are 5 reasons why should be watching this show!

1. You love Sci-Fi and are looking for a new show!

This show combines the political power struggles of Game Of Thrones with the fantasy and sci-fi of Star Trek. The show uses realistic science and technology that makes it less of a fantasy and a little bit more of a drama.  The show is set hundreds of years in the future, things are different than what we are used to after humans have colonized the solar system and Mars has become an independent military power. Rising tensions between Earth and Mars have put them on the brink of war. Against this backdrop, a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain come together to investigate the case of a missing young woman. The investigation leads them on a race across the solar system that could expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

The show was originally on the Syfy network for three seasons before being canceled. But thanks to a powerful fan-led campaign the show was eventually picked up by Amazon Prime Video for a 4th and 5th season. Seasons 1-3 are available on Amazon Prime Video now and season 4 will debut on Amazon Prime Video on December 13th, 2019. Which gives you plenty of time to catch up!

2. Strong Female Characters

There are a lot of great shows with strong female characters. But we always need more! We always welcome more and more. If you want a sci-fi show that shows how badass women in space can be then this is the show for you. These four characters are some of the best-written characters on television. They are complex and ever-evolving characters who are portrayed by amazing actresses. We love that although romantic relationships are a thing on this show, these women are not some gimmick used to tell a story about why our hero must go save the world. They aren’t the bait that lures the hero to a villain’s lair.  They are integral parts of the storyline because of their abilities, intelligence, and humanity.

3. Relationships that feel real

Im not just talking about romantic relationships. Although there are some romantic relationships on the show that are important to the storyline. What this show has plenty of is real relationships between individuals. From friendships to frenemies. The characters on the show are complex and their personalities and stories are rich. It makes for interesting and relatable on-screen relationships that feel real and honest.

4. Diversity

We love the diversity in the casting. But it’s not just in the casting where diversity ends. Many different languages are spoken throughout the show. Small things like the Moon being referred to as Luna (Spanish for Moon), different religions that exist now still exist in the future and many other bits and pieces of culture from all over the world make its way into the show in very subtle ways.

5. Humanity

The show does an amazing job of telling the story of war from multiple perspectives. It’s hard to call anyone the bad guy when everyone is operating under what they believe is the best thing for their homelands. It tells a beautiful and complex story about what can happen when we trust one another. What strides can be made when we see each other as one instead of as enemies. We aren’t always sure who we can trust and we can’t trust. But in the end, it tells a beautiful story about the possible advancement of our humanity and the dangers of the next gold rush.

The Expanse Seasons 1-3 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Season Four Debuts on December 13th, 2019.
