Happy Galentine’s Day – Celebrating Female Friendships (on screen)

On February 13th we are celebrating female friendships everywhere! We need to thank Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) from Parks and Recreations for this fictional holiday, as she made Galentine’s Day famous in 2010 in an episode with the same name. And while Valentine’s Day is for people in a romantic relationship, you can always worship the bond with your best friends.

Leslie describes Galentine’s Day as “…the best day of the year! Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it—breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.

The origin of the “Galentine’s Day” – Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) celebrating (with) her female friends

There are many female best friends on TV or in movies that we adore. We want to show you some of our favorite duos, trios, and groups.

Childhood besties

There is a study that says, that if you have a friendship that lasted for more than 7 years, then he or she will be your friend for a lifetime. Seems legit for the following grown-up friends.

Cece and Jess in NEW GIRL (Hannah Simone and Zooey Deschanel)
Tina, Samantha, Chrissy, and Roberta in NOW AND THEN (Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffman, Ashleigh Aston Moore, and Christina Ricci)
DJ, Steph, and Kimmy in FULLER HOUSE (Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Andrea Barber)
Annie, Beth, and Ruby in GOOD GIRLS (Mae Whitman, Christina Hendricks, and Retta)

Work BFFS

To have someone that knows and understands what you are dealing with every day can help build great friendships. Plus these best friends get their work done.

Ann and Leslie in PARC AND RECREATIONS (Rashida Jones and Amy Poehler)
Christina and Meredith in GREY’S ANATOMY (Sandra Oh and Ellen Pompeo)
Max and Caroline in 2 BROKE GIRLS (Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs)
Jane and Maura in RIZZOLI & ISLES (Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander)
Maria and Carol in CAPTAIN MARVEL (Lashana Lynch and Brie Larson)
Xena and Gabrielle in XENA (Lucy Lawless and Renée O’Connor)

School is cool…when you have friends like these

There might be more ups and downs in these school friendships as life is kinda complicated when you are a teenager. We still adore these friendships and want them to last forever.

Dionna, Tai, and Cher in CLUELESS (Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Alicia Silverstone)
Aimee and Maeve in SEX EDUCATION (Aimee Lou Woods and Emma Mackey)
Frenemies Blair and Serena in GOSSIP GIRLS (Leighton Meester and Blake Lively)

Bonds formed through special circumstances

Sometimes we end up with best friends because of terrible situations or weird circumstances. Makes you wonder if destiny is for real, or if it’s good karma, that you end up with a soulmate after you went through hell.

Poussey and Taystee in ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (Samira Wiley and Tasha Jefferson)
Elise, Annie, and Brenda, the members of the “FIRST WIVES CLUB” (Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler)

Friend groups, we felt being a part of

These long-running series did really make us feel at home when turning on the TV every week.

Phoebe, Rachel and Monica in FRIENDS (Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, and Courtney Cox)
Lily and Robin in How I Met Your Mother (Alyson Hannigan and Colby Smoulders)
Toni, Lynn, Joan, and Maya in GIRLFRIENDS (Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Golden Brooks)

Samantha, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte in SEX AND THE CITY (Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis)

The Golden Girls

Honestly, don’t we all dream of having/keeping such great friends when we get older?

The GOLDEN GIRLS: Dorothy, Sophia, Rose, and Blanche (Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan – Photo by NBCU)
Louise and Thelma in THELMA AND LOUISE (Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis)
Grace and Frankie in GRACE AND FRANKIE (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin)

Of course, there are many many more (fictional) female power friendships out there. And we are happy about this. Did we get your favorite? Tell us your dream team in the comments and have a Happy Galentine’s Day!
