WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING
Stacy- I’ve spent more of my time on Switch playing Celeste, (award-winning platformer with mental health themes), while not neglecting my farming needs on World of Warcraft.
Verdict: Celeste is a difficult platformer with heart addressing some mental health themes; play if you dare!
Amanda- Knights of Pen and Paper (Part 1 and 2); it’s an 8-bit realization of a DnD adventure with characters around the table and a GM, there are even some 4th wall elements.
Verdict: play the 1st one but not the second, the rules get silly and they change the controls in the second game.
GAMING NEWS
Epic Games shows off the new Unreal Engine on PS5
If you’ve not seen the video, we can sum it up in one phrase: The next-gen gaming may be capable of rendering cinematic trailer graphics as standard gameplay. At least, that’s what it looks like from what we’re seeing.
The Medium- New title from the studio of Blair Witch Project games…maybe the next Silent Hill?
A new horror title is coming out and it looks atmospheric, called the Medium. There are lots of links to Silent Hill with some former employees working on this new project. Rumors also abound that there will be a Silent Hill reboot too, so good news on the horror front.
THE HARDEST GAMES WE HAVE EVER PLAYED
Amanda
Duck hunt – as a kid, it’s a hard one! Light guns have come along way.
Super Mario Bros (NES)- if you’re not good at avoiding holes, this isn’t the game for you. It’s basically all that and can be frustrating for less coordinated gamers.
Devil May Cry 2 (Playstation 2)- the whole series is hard in my book, if you want to actually get high scores in chapters, you can’t just button mash and we all know I’m a button masher.
Planetfall (Xbox One)- as a very strategic game, you can invest hours into a scenario that ends up with you back into a corner, unwinnable. It’s a good game but brutally challenging even on normal.
Bootleg Donkey Kong (Bootleg trash poop handheld)- my worst nightmare, a vertical platformer. Take one thing I’m bad at and eliminate any muscle memory by changing direction. Pass!
Stacy
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) – the permadeath, unbalanced reach, and poor underwater design makes this so hard that it’s not fun.
Ghost and Goblins (NES) – This was in the arcades as well as NES. It’s Dark Souls without forgiveness. Get hit two or three times and it’s game over and you start from the beginning.
Celeste (Nintendo Switch)- it’s a good game with HARD platforming, so as you go through you forget the story as you die a lot and it takes hours to progress the game.
Bloodborne (PS4)- it’s one of the games I’m most ashamed of how badly I’ve done at it. You have to know where all the enemies are, their skills and attacks. And I’m terrible at it apparently.
Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templar (Playstation)- I’ve played it first on Playstation, but I’ve since played it on the computer and everywhere in between. It’s a challenging point-and-click adventure game with combined item puzzles. The goat puzzle was so ridiculous. I know I wasn’t alone in being unable to figure this one out.
