WHAT THE REBELS ARE PLAYING

Amanda – If you’ve been following us on social, you’ll know we posted about No Man’s Sky coming to Xbox Game Pass. I always had a passing interest in playing it but let me tell you, I am glad that I didn’t pay for this game. Look, if scanning and gathering is your thing… you’ll love this. But after an hour, I was bored out of my mind. Even with the purported update, I found it to be vapid and tedious. Which is a shame, because I was kind of excited.

Review: Unless you really like scanning…..naw.

Stacy – I’ve been playing a few games myself. The first is Cities: Skylines (PS4), which is definitely detailed in its options. Overwhelmingly so. I spent too much time trying to find a zone to even begin building my city.

Verdict: If you like Civilizations or SimCity but want it to be slower and be more complicated, this is the game for you!

D&D Style Medieval Fantasy RPG (Delight Games, iOS/Android): I started as a wizard, adventuring with a warrior. I made a lot of good choices in my first run through and spent 3 or 4 hours and had a lot of fun.

Verdict: It’s a text-based choice adventure game in the same vein as the Commodore 64 games of old, if you like that kind of thing. Which I do!

GAMING NEWS

KFC’s new console – If you wanted a 4k console with all the FPS you could need PLUS a sick chicken warmer… KFC has released a joke post to capitalize on the hype around Xbox Series X and PS5 and TBH we’re here for it. All consoles should have a built-in chicken tray IMO.

Amazon’s MMO Going into Closed Beta – New World MMO is going into beta in July and you can get access if you preorder the game. Rumored to be more large-scale PvP and battle focused, it will be interesting to see if they’ve learned anything following Crucible.

EA released early footage of their new Star Wars game titled Star Wars: Squadrons, an FPS/cockpit aerial (or space) combat simulator where you get to fly X-wings and TIE fighters, which seems awesome! It may be the only VR title I’m even interested in playing.

Simpsons Fans check out the fan-made game “Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge”, the implausibly boring putting simulator first seen in Season 5 of The Simpson’s. You can try your hand at it here: https://aaron-demeter.itch.io/lee-carvallos-putting-challenge

Thoughts on the PS5 Reveal

Amanda – I don’t give a CRAP what you say, the PS5 is sexy sexy sexy. This is the first time we’ve seen something really new from console design in YEARS! Who can’t see that? I’m Xbox for life -obvs- but even I can be honest about where I think Sony is whooping Microsoft. Sure, it looks like a WiFi router a bit but the Series X looks like a mini-fridge (or my fave comparison, a borg cube lol). It’s a beautiful tall-boi and I’m kind of sad that it won’t be in my entertainment console this fall.

Now let’s talk about the games. What a snoozer. Aside from the new Bethesda IP, every single triple-A game they announced was a known entity. Either rumored or outright known in advance. Now it’s great for indie devs to get exposure and time in a big release, but in my opinion, it seemed excessive with many games getting both a cinematic and gameplay trailer. From a games perspective, it felt like a bit of a waste as many of these indie titles aren’t ca[able of showing off the power of PS5 and it made me feel like Sony is even more behind than I’d previously thought on all fronts besides design aesthetic. It’s possible that Microsoft could totally sweep this.

Stacy- I’ve seen the price leak for the PS5, and though I have a hard time justifying the rumored price, it’s not a deal-breaker! The look of the PS5 is probably the biggest and most pleasant surprise to me. It definitely has a better aesthetic appeal to me than the Xbox Series X. Or as Amanda calls it, the “Borg Cube”.

I’m completely unimpressed with the game lineup, however, and if they don’t come with some top tier, AAA titles come launch, I fear they will start out behind the new Xbox and possibly never catch up. Horizon: Forbidden West looks pretty nice though!
