We sat downs with Bobby Gonzalez & Nitzia Chama and interviewed them about their starring roles in their new Latinx series, The Garcias. The Garcias will follow the life of an American family based in San Antonio, TX, who are gathered for a summer vacation in their fancy beach house in Mexico. The Garcias is a groundbreaking reboot of The Brothers Garcia, which was the first English-language sitcom to have an all-Latino cast and creative team. The Garcias will begin streaming on April 14th on HBO Max.
Interview with Bobby Gonzalez & Nitzia Chama
During our interview with Bobby Gonzalez & Nitzia Chama, they talked to us about the importance of Latinx representation and their excitement for audiences to finally see the series.
Bobby Gonzalez, who will be reprising his role as George Garcia, told us:
“For somebody that’s coming into the show for the first time, I’ll say that our tagline pretty much says it best. This show is -Todo por la Familia- everything for the family. It’s a family show about family. I could drive that home all day, but the truth is families fight but families always love each other. Families mess with each other. There is a lot of dynamics that into a family and we go through all of those. But those aren’t the only issues that we talk about. We also talk about representation, identity, those are important things in this show.”
Nitzia Chama, who will play opposite Bobby as Ana Garcia, George’s wife, described how important the on-screen representation is to her:
“I feel very grateful for this opportunity. This is the biggest blessing in my life because just to be able to see so many brown faces and not only brown but Latinos in a diverse cast. The beauty of this diversity, it just makes me so so happy. And to be able to be one of the new additions to the show, I couldn’t believe it.”
The Garcias on HBO Max
The Garcias is a groundbreaking reboot of The Brothers Garcia, which was the first English-language sitcom to have an all-Latino cast and creative team. Following in that same tradition, this new show will follow this American family based in San Antonio, TX. The family is gathered for a summer vacation in their fancy beach house in Mexico.
The core cast members from the original series — Ada Maris (Sonia Garcia), Carlos Lacamara (Ray Garcia), Alvin Alvarez (Larry Garcia), Jeffrey Licon (Carlos Garcia), Bobby Gonzalez (George Garcia), Vaneza Pitynski (Lorena Garcia) — will reprise their roles in the reboot. In addition to the original cast, we will also get new cast members joining the series. The Garcia children are all grown up and now have spouses and children of their own. Joining the cast are Nitzia Chama as Ana Garcia, Elsha Kim as Yunjin Huh Garcia, Oliver Alexander as Max Garcia, Maeve Garay as Victoria Garcia, Ayva Severy as Andrea Huh Garcia, and Trinity Jo-Li Bliss as Alexa Huh Garcia.
The series will begin streaming on April 14th on HBO Max.
