Invincible at WonderCon

This past Saturday at WonderCon some of the creative team of Invincible took to the stage to talk about season 3. They discussed its creation, a little about how adaptation works and how they felt about the season overall. The audience got to revisit some of the seasons most impactful seasons. They also got insight into how they were created. The panel hosted co-showrunner and executive producer Simon Racioppa, art director Dou Hong, and supervising producers and supervising directors Shaun O’Neil and Dan Duncan.

Season 3 of Invincible raises the stakes yet again to world ending threats and expertly balances them with some of the most emotional beats to ever come out of a superhero show.

Invincible Team at WonderCon

One of the biggest things that happened this season, action-wise, was the Invincible war. Simone Racioppa gives some insight into what it takes adapting something of that scale. According to him it’s their job to take what is incredible from the books and make it fit into an hour. That means that they get to really break apart the panels and add in some extra dialogue and emotion.

The creative team also gets a lot of input in how the action scenes play out. Not everything is expressly written in the script. The writers block out the beats and then the directors and art director get to fill in the blanks. The creative team gets to have good conversations about what would work best for the story and the characters.

One of the most emotionally impactful moments this season was Mark confessing his feelings for Eve. Art director Dou Hong weighed in on how these quieter scenes fit into a show like this. She states that the show isn’t afraid to give these pauses. That normally in shows like this there’s no time to breathe and that pacing is what makes the scene.

Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson), Christian Convery (Oliver Grayson)

The entire team also spent a good amount of their WonderCon panel time raving about the amazing Steven Yeun. They talked about his talent, his ability to evolve his performance with the story and his passion for his character and the story.

Season 3 of Invincible is the best season yet, and the creative team agrees. There is no telling what we are in for with season 4 but one thing is for sure, the creative team is just as passionate about the show as the fans are.
