Invincible Season 2, Episode 6 Recap – Taking Down the Viltrimites

Season 2 of Invincible really raises the stakes. While this season lacks as many twists as season 1, there do seem to be a lot of threats, most of which were set up within the first few episodes of the series. Though they still have yet to be mentioned again, there’s still lots to wrap up in these last few episodes. We finished up episode 5 with the Lizard League attacking and the strongest of the guardians taking on the Martians. Now, the writers are focusing on how to take down the Viltrimites.

Starting Off the Episode with a Bang

The first scene of the episode opens with Rex getting shot in the head. This season is super brutal — we have 3 episodes left and two guardians of the globe are dead. It’s notable since these are characters that we actually had a chance to get attached to, unlike the first season where we saw them in a single scene before they were killed. Rex is alive, but barely.

Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), Khary Payton (Black Samson), Ross Marquand (Robot), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), Ben Schwartz (Shapesmith), Jay Pharaoh (Bulletproof)

Mark single handedly destroys Martian warships so that the guardians can escape with Shapesmith. Mark and Sam remind us why fans are anxiously awaiting them getting together, but with Rex’s reformed, more mature nature, the possibility of him and Sam still hangs in the air. This season excels at showing, through Mark and Amber, that civilian-superhero relationships are probably not a great idea. The scenes between them are super awkward and Mark seems to be realizing that he is putting Amber through a lot, and his absence seems to really wear on Amber.

The little brother storyline for Mark is absolutely adorable. It does a great job of giving both Mark and Debbie a little bit of healing after what Nolan put them through. They have something positive to hold onto after the heartbreak of being pretty sure that Nolan is dead.

Taking Down the Viltrimites

Mark discovers that his dad wrote fantasy novels. These novels actually depict real events, real things that Viltrimites are vulnerable to. Nolan basically chronicled his people’s weaknesses after he had settled with Debbie and Mark. This plants the idea that Nolan did question his people and he really loved his family.

Allen and Mark finally reunite and Allen fills him in on everything that happened with him. Allen asks Mark to come with him so that they can figure out how to defeat the Viltrimites. However, Mark decides not to go but shares the novels with Allen.

We discover that Nolan is still alive, but the Viltrimites consider his weakness as more of a motivation to destroy earth. The episode’s tag shows us that the dimension jumper has most definitely not forgotten about Mark. Thus, the guardians’ win on Mars might be short lived.
