Marvel, DC, and Indie Hits Shine in GlobalComix Hispanic Heritage Collection

From September 15 to October 15, the United States vibrantly observes National Hispanic Heritage Month. This 30-day period honors the rich histories, vibrant traditions, and profound cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans tracing their roots to Spain and 19 Spanish-speaking nations across Latin America and the Caribbean. GlobalComix is celebrating Hispanic creativity with a curated collection built around stories and creators of Hispanic heritage. Below are the recommended titles featured in the collection.

Pancho Villa Monster Hunter

Created by Hector Rodriguez III and illustrated by Ariel Medel through Chispa Comics, this gun-slinging series follows legendary rebel general Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution. Armed with courage, wit, and loyal fighters, Villa embarks on a supernatural quest to defend Mexico against a horde of monstrous creatures. Find it here!

The comic is inspired by Pancho Villa (José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, 1878–1923) was a legendary general, former outlaw, and charismatic leader of the Mexican Revolution. Rising from poverty, he became a brilliant military tactician who championed the rights of the rural poor, led the formidable Division of the North, and instituted popular land reforms. His complex revolutionary career included fighting to overthrow dictators and participating in the bloody civil wars that followed. Internationally, he became notorious for his 1916 cross-border raid on Columbus, New Mexico, which triggered a massive, though unsuccessful, U.S. military expedition led by General John J. Pershing to capture him. Assassinated in 1923, Villa is remembered today as a complex national hero and an enduring symbol of Mexican defiance and revolutionary spirit.

Primos

Written by Al Madrigal and illustrated by Carlo Barberi via AWA Studios, this story follows two Mayan brothers who built a spacecraft centuries ago. When one brother returns seeking revenge with intergalactic technology, his sibling activates a contingency plan, leaving the fate of the planet in the hands of three scattered cousins from Central and North America who have never met. Comic books have been a lifelong passion for Al Madrigal, rather than just a recent interest. Transitioning from a devoted fan to starring in a comic book-inspired film like the Spider-Verse (Morbius) has been a surreal, dream-come-true experience that he shares with his 10-year-old son, who is equally enthusiastic about the genre. This deep-rooted love for the medium ultimately inspired Madrigal to launch his own Latino superhero comic book series, titled Primos.

Green Lanterns (2016-)

Authored by Sam Humphries with illustrations by Robson Rocha, Ed Benes, and Ethan Van Sciver from DC, this series follows new Green Lantern recruits Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. Assigned by Hal Jordan to protect the planet, they must work together as partners to stop Atrocitus, the tyrannical leader of the Red Lanterns, from infecting Earth with murderous red rage. The Green Lantern franchise has recently seen a rise in popularity, mostly due to the success of its new show. Based on the DC comic “Green Lantern,” the drama series “Lanterns” follows recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan. These two intergalactic cops are drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Blue Beetle (2016-)

Written by Keith Giffen and illustrated by Scott Kolins for DC, this series follows teenager Jamie Reyes, who is bonded to the Blue Beetle Scarab. Alongside fellow teen hero Doctor Fate and his mentor Ted Kord, Jamie learns how to be a hero on the fly. Read it here!

You can catch up on the comics just in time for Blue Beetle’s return to the big screen. It was announced earlier this summer that Xolo Maridueña is set to reprise his role in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The film, currently in production, will be directed by James Gunn. Maridueña first portrayed Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who gains superpowers when an alien scarab latches onto him, in the 2023 movie Blue Beetle, directed by Angel Manuel Soto.

Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story (2021)

Acclaimed author Lilliam Rivera and artist Steph C. reimagine one of DC’s greatest Green Lanterns, Jessica Cruz, in a powerful graphic novel about immigration, family, and overcoming fear to inspire hope. Jessica has done everything right: she is a dedicated student, popular among her classmates, and blessed with a loving family that has sacrificed everything to give her a better life in the United States. While she has always worried about her undocumented parents, her anxiety escalates sharply when a mayoral candidate launches a vicious anti-immigration campaign in Coast City. As local xenophobia surges, Jessica begins to question whether it is worth staying in the U.S. or returning to Mexico.

Despite trying to lean on her support system, she is haunted by visions of Aztec gods, one pulling her toward hope, the other toward anger. When her father is detained by I.C.E., Jessica is plunged into an abyss of despair. Feeling helpless, she must confront her deepest fears to break free of her anxiety and ultimately become a voice for her community. Offering a timely look at the world as it currently is, this story reflects both the harsh realities we face and the world as we wish it could be, reminding us of the collective power of hope and how we can work to make things better.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022)

Driven by the massive cinematic success of the Spider-Verse films, now is an ideal time to explore Miles Morales comics, particularly the high-stakes God War storyline. Written by Cody Ziglar and illustrated by Federico Vicentini, the plot follows the spider-god Anansi as he chooses Miles to be his champion in an ancient blood feud against Ares, the God of War. With divine forces colliding in his backyard, Miles finds himself way out of his depth and must rely on the backup of Thor and Hercules to survive the tournament and prevent an all-out war. Star Wars (2025)

Launched by New York Times best-selling author Alex Segura with art by Phil Noto for Marvel, this adventure in the wake of Return of the Jedi follows Luke Skywalker defending the New Republic from mercenaries, Han Solo investigating a deadly underworld mystery, and Leia Organa grappling with a new alliance.
