Only for the brave of heart. Watch out spoilers ahead.
If you are a fan of The Conjuring Universe odds are you probably want to go see The Nun. If you aren’t but love the cult like following these movies have you will definitely love this movie. The Nun is about the demonic character who has made appearances in The Conjuring Universe. The movies include The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation. The demonic characters name is Valak. The demon takes different shapes and identities. His primary demonic figure is the nun. It doesn’t explain why he takes after this figure, we just know that he does.
The movie was suppose to give the background story of Valak. Although it falls short on this. A brief explanation is given but the exact origins of where Valak comes from it unknown. Valak resides in a monastery in Romania. Apparently before it was a monastery a rich person lived there. The man who lived in the castle was into the occult and summoned the demon Valak. Thus releasing Valak into this Romanian town. Valak was locked into the castle and couldn’t escape.
The monastery is run by nuns who pray around the clock to protect the village and monastery from the demon Valak. Apparently a recent war damaged the castle in Romania thus releasing Valak to roam around the monastery causing all kinds of evil.
The Vatican has to get involved sending their best Priest and soon to be nun into Romania to investigate a recent death at the Monastery.
The movie is primarily set on how the priest and soon to be nun investigate this monastery. What they find, what they endure and the outcome of their findings. The movie has many jump out of your seat moments.
The score for the movie is beautiful and the movie was cinematically stunning. Giving the movie the perfect creep factor. Although I am a hardcore fan of the demon Valak; the movie fell flat. Valak wasn’t shown nearly as much as he should have. The movie was only 93 minutes long. There was room for more character development. I still highly recommend this movie. I feel you have to experience it in order to fully understand The Conjuring Universe.
