Ray Park Talks About His Return To The Star Wars Galaxy

Warning! Solo spoilers ahead!

Solo: A Star Wars Story is available for digital download on September 14th (link to: https://moviesanywhere.com/movie/solo-a-star-wars-story and will be available September 25 on Blu-Ray/DVD

One of the best moments of Solo was finding out the head of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate was none other than Darth Maul, complete again with shiny new robotic legs.

We spoke to the man behind that exciting cameo, Ray Park, about his return to the Star Wars galaxy.  “I couldn’t tell my wife. We were in Guatemala on vacation and I got a call from a special person. And my phone wasn’t working well overseas. I’d had a few messages and I told my wife it’s probably something to do with a convention, I’ll call back later. When I finally got the call, I said (to my wife) I’m not allowed to tell you, but you know who I’m talking to and I just did my happy dance.”

He dove into extra training, even though he wouldn’t be fighting in his appearance. He strives to always be ready. “After I played Snakes Eyes, it really opened my eyes to training. When I first played Darth Maul, I was 22. Fresh from competing. I was training 15 hours a day anyway, scientifically programmed out everyday. Twenty years later, I played Snake Eyes. Things change. Training changes. So when I did get the call, I trained my backside off. It was the best training of my life. It was nice to get that six-pack back.”

And regarding that brand new lower body, Ray Park joked “I just wish they’d made me a little taller. Not in the movie, but in real life.”

The surprising comeback of Darth Maul did make it seem like there could be more from him in the future. With its somewhat disappointing box office performance, it’s tough to gauge if that will actually happen. Hopefully, more people will give this lively origin story a chance.
