Butcher
Butcher (Karl Urban) is frustrated. He was unable to free his wife Becca from the clutches of VOUGHT because she refused to abandon her son. After a fight he instigated in a club, he goes to a supermarket to get something to cool his black eye. This is when Hughie (Jack Quaid) reaches him on his cell phone. Butcher lies and bows out with revealing that he will now probably retire and move to Argentina.
Instead, Butcher destroys the SIM card of his cell phone and drives off to his aunt. She houses Butcher’s beloved dog “Terror” (for those who need to know: nothing happens to the dog during this episode). She is not amused about Butcher not calling his parents but lets him stay.
After a long walk, Butcher returns with “Terror” and finds M.M. (Laz Alonso) and Hughie in the living room. M.M. thought it was strange that Hughie described Butcher as “nice” on the phone. What fave Butcher away was the dog toy Hughie heard squeaking during their phonecall. A pissed of Butcher wants to leave. However, he realizes, that Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) has followed him to his aunt’s house. He is now waiting outside for the right moment to attack. To prepare for their flight, Butcher calls the ambulance and firefighters. The made-up incident forces Black Noir to wait with his attack.
A deal with the enemy
After the street is cleared up the four hide in the basement. Hughie learns from Butcher’s aunt that he had a brother. They don’t get to the point of what happened to the brother, as the house is shaken by the explosive traps they build from the utensils of the aunt’s drug lab. Although they are powerful enough to distract Black Noir, they are not strong enough to turn him off.
So Butcher faces the direct, but hopeless fight to get rid of him. He and his friends only survive this by accepting a deal with the new boss of VOUGHT, Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito). In exchange for their safety, Butcher promises to keep the secret of “Homelander” (Anthony Starr). He promises to not tell anyone that the Supe raped his wife and fathered a child. Black Noir leaves and they are safe for the moment.
Fake it to make it
After “Queen Maeve” (Dominique McElligott) got exposed by “Homelander”, her sexuality is placed in disproportionate importance in the movie the Sups are currently filming. Moreover, the marketing team of VOUGHT tries to put a fake image on her, as they did before with Starlight. Their only goal is to form Maeve’s relationship with Elena in a way the company can benefit from. To them, it doesn’t count that Maeve is bisexual and not a “pure” lesbian. Neither does that Elena isn’t willing to transform herself into the “male counterpart” of the couple. Nor that she wants to live their relationship in public. Maeve sees no other way to flee this “Homelander”-initiated humiliation and keep Elena safe. She turns to “The Deep” (Chase Crawford) and offers to bring him back into “The Seven” if he helps her in return.
“The Deep” is trying everything to restore his image. In a talk show, he introduces the world to his (fake)wife. They deliver a perfect show of the newlyweds that are deeply in love and support each other. Moreover, he is filming a commercial for the Church of the Collective together with its chairman, Alastair Adana (Goran Visnjic). But when starving people come to the Church, “The Deep” gives books to them. They came in hope of getting something to eat, but “food for the brain” would be even better, proclaims “The Deep”. This is the moment Maeve appears, offering him a solution to his situation.
The reveal of secrets
Meanwhile, Annie aka “Starlight” (Erin Moriarty) is having a hard time on the set of “The Dawn of the Seven”. She is trying to maintain the facade facing “Stormfront” (Aya Cash) and tries to pretend she likes her. But during scenes she has with her, Annie acts weird, which makes “Stormfront” take notice. During lunch “Stormfront” approaches Annie’s mother, of whose presence Annie knew nothing about. Annie is still angry with her about lying and giving her Compound V, and, therefore, is not happy about her visit. Even more, she is reluctant that her mother talks of all to “Stormfront” about these personal things. “Stormfront”, on the other hand, enjoys that Annie’s mother calls her Annie’s friend and Annie getting angry about it. Almost by the way she lets her know that she knows who leaked the info about Compound V.
After her “friend” has left and she had asked her mother to go, Annie approaches “Stormfront’s” trailer. While she looks for further clues about “Liberty”, she finds e-mails on her laptop. The address is for the SAGE GROVE CENTER, a facility we see “Stormfront” having telephone contact with later. When “Stormfront” returns to her trailer unexpectedly, she threatens Annie to reveal the information she has about her betrayal. She doesn’t seem to be surprised or too upset when Annie in return confronts her with knowing that she is “Liberty”. Before anything else happens, “Homelander” interrupts their conversation, and Annie “flees” from the trailer with the words from “Stormfront”: “You will be useful to me“.
A new alliance
“Homelander” has self-inflicted image problems after a video is released. It shows him killing an innocent boy during an unauthorized mission. Against the instructions of the hero manager Ashley (Colby Minifie), “Homelander” hits an anti-VOUGHT demo. The crowd in front of the tower accused him of being a war criminal. When the people begin to abuse him, we see “Homelander” massacre the crowd with his laser beams. But this was just in “Homelander’s” mind – he resists the urge to kill his opponents and flies back to the movie set.
Back at the set, he asks “Stormfront” for the help she has offered him before. With wise foresight has she already prepared some memes that should help denounce the VOUGHT opponents and restore “Homelander’s” reputation. (Ironic when you consider that she used memes in the last episode to harm “Homelander” and push herself to the fore.) The episode ends with them having some brutal foreplay, with both being turned on when “Homelander” lasers “Stormfront’s” breasts, and some “super” sex.
