Today on Instagram Live, Maddie and Liz discussed their feelings about the Doctor Who New Year’s Day special “Revolution of the Daleks.” This post contains spoilers. If you have not watched the holiday special, then we suggest you do so before reading.
Doctor Who returns with the Thirteenth Doctor (played by Jodie Whittaker) in an action-packed holiday special. Season 12 was packed full of shocking twists, turns and surprises. This special saw the return of one of the Doctor’s biggest and most feared enemies – the Daleks. The Doctor is locked away in a high-security alien prison. She is isolated with no hope of escape. Back on Earth, her best friends, Yaz, Ryan and Graham have to pick up their lives without her. It isn’t easy on them. How do you live regular life after being with the Doctor? Soon, they discover a disturbing plan forming that involves a Dalek. Read the full recap of the special here!
Fans have been waiting a long time for this holiday special. The return of Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman) was so special. Seeing him interact with the Doctor again after so long was incredible. Captain Jack “committed a lot of crimes” in order to get into the same prison she was in. He then breaks her out and helps get her back to her TARDIS. When they return to earth, her Ryan (played by Tosin Cole), Yaz (played by Mandip Gill), and Graham (played by Bradley Walsh) were both happy to see her and upset with her for being gone for so long. In typical TARDIS fashion, she was late. Her plan was to come back to them moments after they returned, but she arrived ten months later. And, to her surprise, with more Daleks to get rid of.
Captain Jack and the Doctor are off to destroy the Daleks, together, just like old times. With the help of Yaz, Ryan, and Graham, they save the world from being exterminated.
When season 12 ended, fans knew that the Doctor just needed a hug. Sure enough, she got plenty this episode! Unfortunately, most of them were because she said goodbye. Both Ryan and Graham decided it was their time to step away from the TARDIS and live their lives home on Earth. It was sad to see them go, but it was refreshing that companions got a peaceful, non-tragic ending! This was a great way to set up the next season.
