How is illustrating for Doctor Who comics different from other works you’ve done, such as Witchblade?
Roberta: The Doctor is very different from Witchblade, especially when it comes to environments. Witchblade was set in a realistic New York, while the Doctor used space or alien planets as environments. Let’s say that New York is easier because the internet offers many reference photos, but the Doctor has more imagination, you can invent many more things and this can be a lot of fun!
Were you a fan of Doctor Who before you began working on these comics?
Roberta: Absolutely yes, being a fan helps me a lot in drawing the Doctor. Knowing the character helps me find the right poses and best expressions that accompany Jodie’s lyrics!
Are there specific Doctor Who episodes you watch or have reference photos from that you use to design the characters?
Roberta: I have the computer and the HDD full of images, gifs, screenshots of the episodes! Without this documentation, I would not be able to draw Doctor Who at best!
What did you find the most fascinating as you worked on this series of Doctor adventures?
Roberta: Watching the Doctor episodes while I draw the Doctor!
Are there any panels or scenes in this comic that you are particularly proud of?
Roberta: Maybe the panels where both the 13th Doctor and the 10th appear because they are both my favorite doctors, so it was an honor for me to be able to draw them! Above all, being able to draw them together!
Did the pandemic change the landscape for how you worked at all?
Roberta: The pandemic was a travel companion, and it still is today. For cartoonists I don’t think much has changed, we live many hours at home and we go out little, but during this pandemic my husband and I took the house and renovated it, now we have gone to live there. I advise everyone not to renovate their home and move in during a pandemic, it’s not easy! In all of this, there was the work and the deliveries, so yes, it was very intense. But now I work with the background of the countryside, in silence, surrounded by dogs, cats, and chickens. I think leaving the city during Covid was the wisest choice my family has made this year.
Doctor Who: Alternating Current is now available to purchase on Amazon, Forbidden Planet, and for digital devices!
