San Diego Comic-Con postponed until 2022, smaller fall event planned

This week, Comic-Con International announced that due to concern for public health and safety, San Diego Comic-Con has canceled their 2021event. This marks the second year in a row that San Diego Comic-Con has canceled it’s in-person due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals who have purchased badges that were rolled over to the 2021 show will have those badges automatically transferred to the 2022 event unless a refund is requested.

They had recently announced that their spring 2021 show, WonderCon in Anaheim, would also be canceled. In its place, WonderCon@Home will once again be held as a free online event on March 26 and 27, 2021. Last summer, in place of their in-person event, San Diego Comic Con went virtual with Comic-Con@Home. This year, the online experience will be reduced to a three-day event, spanning July 23-25, 2021.

In their statement, Comic Con International pointed to safety as the primary reason for postponing the in-person events. “While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con. For this reason, we have made the challenging decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as an in-person gathering until our 2022 dates, and once again hold this year’s celebration as the free online Comic-Con@Home.”

In the same statement, it was announced that San Diego Comic Convention is planning to present a three-day, in-person convention in San Diego in November. Little details have been revealed at this time. They are still trying to figure out specific details like attendance capacity, badge cost, and related information. Some fans have speculated that the event will take place in a smaller section of the convention center on the weekend of November 19th through the 21st. This date has not been announced by San Diego Con Con yet.
