Sherlock Holmes mysteries get supernatural in Netflix’s “The Irregulars”

Coming this week to Netflix, Sherlock Holmes mysteries get supernatural in The Irregulars. The Irregulars is set in Victorian London and follows a group of troubled teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes. The show stars Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw, and Harrison Osterfield. It is written and executive produced by Tom Bidwell.

The Irregulars

We have had a number of “Sherlock Holmes” shows and films in the last decade. However, this isn’t your typical Sherlock Holmes story. This latest adaptation is a supernatural thriller with a brilliant ensemble cast. It differs quite a bit from many of the current Sherlock Holmes stories.

For one, Sherlock Holmes plays a small role in it. Similar to how Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobbie Brown, was more about the other less known characters in the Sherlock Holmes universe.

In the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle “The Irregulars” are mentioned very briefly while in the modern Sherlock series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, they are mentioned as Sherlock’s homeless network that he relies on for information. That basically translates into what we have here. This series focuses on this group of essential nobodies who help Sherlock and Watson solve crimes. Imagine them as the Scooby-Doo gang, but there actually are ghosts and dangerous supernatural elements at play.

Talking with the cast

The show is suspenseful and scary, but within all of that, there is a lot of tenderness and compassion. This story of the found family of orphaned teens who take care of one another and go on these epic adventures. It’s told through the lens of those who have very little and know the struggles of everyday people and the less fortunate all too well.

During a recent interview with the cast for That Hashtag Show, they told me what it’s like stepping into a new iteration of the beloved Sherlock Holmes stories and what they hope the audience takes away with them.

The Irregulars will stream exclusively on Netflix on March 26th.
