Each week, we get quite a bit of news about the pop-culture world. There is always something new and exciting. Let’s take a look at this week in geek for the week of March 20th.

This Week in Geek March 20th

After a re-release in theaters in China, Avatar surpassed Avengers: Endgame as the top-grossing movie of all time, when not adjusted for inflation. The film, which was first released in 2009, now has a total box office earnings of $2.8 billion. Due to delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Avatar sequel will be released in theaters in December 2022.

Beyonce and Taylor Swift

The GRAMMY Awards were held on Sunday, March 14th. Beyoncé went in with the most nominations. She won the most awards, including Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl,” which featured her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” won Album of the Year.

Oscar nominations were also announced this week. There were multiple historic nods this year. Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell were each nominated for best director. This is the first time more than one woman has been nominated in the same year. Zhao, who directed Nomadland, is also the first POC woman to be nominated in that category. Riz Ahmed and Steven Yuen were the first Muslim and Asian American actors, respectively, to be nominated for Best Actor. Their films, The Sound of Metal and Minari are also nominated for Best Picture. Chadwick Boseman was recognized with a nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The 93rd Academy Awards will be presented on April 25, 2021.

In the Heights debuted a new trailer and posters in advance of its release on June 18. Brought to you by Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Jon Chu, streets are made of music and little dreams become big in Washington Heights. It stars Hamilton alum, Anthony Ramos, as Usnavi, a role created and played by Miranda on Broadway.

On Thursday, the Justice League Snyder Cut was released on HBO Max. With a runtime of four hours long, it is a re-edited version of the 2017 Justice League. It is more in line with original director Zack Snyder’s intent. New scenes and content are introduced, as well as cutting some scenes from the theatrical release. View our full review here.

Also, a new mobile game called “Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassin” from Maze Theory was released. Now available on iPhone, Androids, and PC, this narrative-driven cryptic ‘found phone adventure game has you helping UNIT’s Osgood as you try to take on the Weeping Angels. Disney News

Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California set to open on April 30, 2021.

Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure park will plan to reopen on April 30, 2021. Reservations will be subject to capacity limits. Only California residents will be able to visit the parks in order to follow COVID-19 guidelines. Face masks will be required for all guests. Before entering the parks, guests will also be required to have their temperatures checked.

The Disney series “Ducktales” has come to an end after three fun and adventure-filled seasons. The reboot, featuring David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck, wrapped up with “The Last Adventure!” featuring your favorite Duck family. However, these characters will continue some version of their story in an upcoming scripted “Ducktales” podcast called “This Duckburg Life.”

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” premiered on Disney+ on Friday the 19th. The show stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan and will be released in six episodes in contrast to WandaVision’s nine. The series is directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman as the head writer. It follows the lives and adventures of Sam Wilson, aka “The Falcon” (Anthony Mackie), and Bucky Barnes, aka “The Winter Soldier” (Sebastian Stan) after the events of the film Avengers: End Game.
