Sophisticated brand celebrates Marvel and DC superheroes, RBG

Throw out your worn-out geeky tees! Fans of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman can rep their favorite superheroes with considerably more style, thanks to small but growing fashion brand Heroicouture. The online shop celebrates this powerful pair of Marvel and DC superheroes with exclusive prints for comic book enthusiasts looking for more sophisticated styles.

Sera models the Captain Carol Ruffle Sleeve Top and Captain Carol Headband by Heroicouture.

In keeping with their goal to reflect strong heroines in pop culture and real life, the brand also pays homage to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. RBG is immortalized in a fierce print that comes in a range of styles, including tops, skirts, scarves, bags, and other accessories.

Comic book characters Carol Danvers and Diana Prince are dear to Heroicouture founder and CEO Sandra L. Botero’s heart. As a child, she watched and was inspired by the Wonder Woman television series starring Lynda Carter.

About the brand

A self-described “curvy Latina,” Sandra founded Heroicouture with a mission of creating apparel and accessories that cater to an overlooked demographic of “chic geeks.”  They feature fun fabric designs by her and daughter Jaime L. Botero

Maddie wears the Damask Jet Dolman and Damask Jet Face Mask by Heroicouture.

Sandra founded the brand as a made-to-order company, hand-sewing the clothing herself. The operation has expanded, but the apparel is still handsewn in partnership with a manufacturer who helps women, including many who are indigenous.

Heroicouture recently signed a licensing deal with Game Master, a new esports reality show slated to begin filming in January in Atlanta. Sandra will design official merchandise and apparel worn on the show. Hosted by Wil Wheaton, the series stars 12 amateur gamers who live together and compete for a $100,000 prize. Produced by Georgia-based Peach Maria, the show will air in spring 2022 via streaming.

Temple of Geek Chic asked cosplayers and geek fashion fans Sera (@bougieandthegeek), Maddie (@maddie_whovian), and Kelsey (@futuristik.cosplay) to model pieces featuring Heroicouture’s superhero prints. Here is our review.

Captain Carol Ruffle Sleeve Top

When it comes to apparel inspired by Captain Marvel, the bold colors of Carol Danvers’ suit tend to be a designer’s go-to. So, we can’t help but love Heroicouture’s elegant, trendy twist on the hero’s signature blue, red, and gold. Paired with soft, ruffly sleeves, the print’s star and chevron pattern feels new and exciting. This is a versatile piece that could be worn with a skirt, work pants, or jeans.

This cold shoulder-style top looked stunning on Sera. We love how she paired it with a gold skirt from her closet. “The knit is really nice and soft,” she said. “The sleeves are nice and light, so it’s an any season type of thing.”

Sera wore a size 2X.

Damask Jet Dolman

Once again, this design takes a classic superhero and pays homage to her in unexpected ways. While designers tend to fixate on Wonder Woman’s iconic “W” logo, the focus of this print is on the Amazon’s favorite mode of transportation — her invisible jet. From the color block design in gorgeous crimson and blue to the contrasting patch emblazoned with stripes and fleur-de-lis, this motif is completely unique.

The top was extremely flattering on Maddie, who described it as comfortable, if a little long at the waist. “I love how soft the material is and the loose fit is really nice for all weather,” she said.

This is another versatile top that could be worn with almost anything, from casual yoga pants to office wear. It also pairs perfectly with the Damask Jet Palazzo Tuxedo Pants pictured below.

Maddie modeled a size XS.

Damask Jet Palazzo Tuxedo Pants

These breezy palazzo pants feature a tuxedo stripe down the side with Heroicouture’s exclusive Damask Jet design, inspired by Sandra’s favorite DC superhero. The stripe represents Wonder Woman’s signature colors in a subtle, classy way. The pants are luxuriously soft and flowy with nice movement when you walk. Best of all, they boast the geek fashion Holy Grail: hidden pockets!

Heroicouture’s website says the palazzo pants were made for “ultimate sophisticated geekiness.” You could pair them with the Damask Jet tops, including the dolman above. Wear them out on the town or for lounging at home.

Maddie wore a size XS. The pants were a little long on a couple people who tried them, so they may require hemming.

Ruth Holding Court Dolman Top

This loving tribute to late, great Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is full of wonderful details. It’s one of our absolute favorite Heroicouture prints!

Among the fun but fitting “hidden” homages are a flower seen on the ceiling of the actual Supreme Court room, a pearl pattern, and a likeness of RBG wearing her signature glasses, earrings, and “dissent collar.” We also appreciate the beautiful pastel color combo. The dolman is stretchy and slouchy for ease of movement, making it both comfortable and flattering.

Kelsey modeled a size small.

Ruth Holding Court Tie Sleeve Top

If you like Heroicouture’s Ruffle Sleeve Tops, you might want to add a little variety to your wardrobe with this tie sleeve option. It’s made for comfort with a knit bodice, but elevated by floaty poly-chiffon sleeves and can easily be dressed up or down.

Kelsey wore an XL. The top also comes in a Ruffle Sleeve style.

Ruth Holding Court A-Line Skirt

This white A-line skirt is a fun way to wear the Ruth Holding Court print, thanks to its bright pattern, classic feel, and fantastic twirl. Of course, we’re huge fans of the hidden seam pockets. The hem tends to hit below the knee. The peach-skin knit fabric is cool and sleek and the stretchy waistband provides extra comfiness.

Kelsey described the tops and skirt in the Ruth Holding Court print as comfortable to wear. “It’s all so flowy and just breathes so easy,” she said.

Kelsey is also a big fan of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Our photo shoot happened to be the day after Ginsburg passed away, so she was touched to pay tribute to her hero by modeling this print.

She wore the skirt in an Extra Large. According to Heroicouture’s website, it can be worn either high or low on the waist, so size up or down accordingly.

Ruth Holding Court Peplum Belt

A Peplum Belt is a stretchy strip of fabric with a chiffon ruffle worn around the waist. The belt is an accent-type accessory you can wear with jeans and a black top or a basic-colored dress or skirt.

According to Sandra, you can pair it with one of Heroicouture’s matching skirts or tops, particularly the Ruffle Sleeve Tops (but not the dolman or cardigan). You can also match it with the Palazzo Tuxedo Pants.

Peplum Belts come in sizes XS to 3X and run a little small, so size up if you want more fabric to tie around your waist.

Other accessories

Our models also tried out face masks and headbands by Heroicouture.

The Damask Jet Face Mask and Captain Carole Face Mask are made of a soft, non-irritating peach-skin knit. They’re handmade and machine washable. Best of all, you can match them to your Heroicouture outfit.

Sera said her mask fit well and comfortably and she loves “a matching mask moment.”

The Captain Carol Headband is made of the same soft knit used for the Heroicouture clothing line. You could wear it with practically anything.

As a fun bonus, Maddie got to wear a headband in another of Heroicouture’s exclusive prints. The Kaiju Headband doesn’t depict a superhero but does feature one of cinema’s most beloved movie monsters.  We don’t see this item currently listed on the shop’s website, but the same, or a similar, design is available in a scarf, tote bag, and face mask

Overall

As huge admirers of Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we were fangirling hard during this photo shoot. We love how Heroicouture brings a delicate, geek chic touch to iconic DC and Marvel superheroes, as well as a real-life crusader for justice.

Throughout the shoot, the models gave outstanding feedback about the clothes. They noted the comfort of the designs, the softness of the fabric, and the versatility of the pieces. The clothes can be easily styled as dressy or casual. They’re machine washable, which makes them practical. The sizing is inclusive, ranging from XS to 3X (and 4X and 5X by custom order).

Heroicouture makes it simple to build a geeky wardrobe by mixing and matching items to form complete outfits. Any of their pieces would make excellent Christmas gifts for the geeky fashionista in your life.

Heroicouture’s 2021 collection also features designs inspired by Doctor Who and Star Wars. We previously featured the Doctor Who line here. We’ll showcase the Star Wars line in an upcoming Temple of Geek Chic post.
