Cosplay Connection, hosted by Maddie, went live on the Temple of Geek Instagram to interview cosplayer Jazmin Duarte. Cosplay Connection is all about learning more about cosplayers and their journeys through cosplay.
Getting to know Jazmin’s introduction to cosplay
Jazmin has been creating cosplays for about a year, but she got her start putting costumes together for Renaissance Fairs. Her first cosplay was Merlin from the BBC television show Merlin, and the connection to this character was incredibly special.
“I just absolutely love the show. I’ve re-watched it a billion times. I’m never sick of it. He’s one of my absolute favorite characters! I just thought, you know, it’s a simple costume that I could put together!”
The process of deciding who to cosplay
Some cosplayers feel that they need to connect with a character on an emotional level before deciding to cosplay. Relating to a character can bring a costume to life in such a beautiful way. Maddie asked what the process looked like for Jazmin. Is connecting with a character truly important before making the decision to cosplay?
“I do need to have some kind of emotional connection to the character, I think. You know, because there are villains I like but I’m not like them at all! But I do really like them. But that’s one of the reasons why I don’t have so many cosplays, either. I really like to have an emotional attachment to them or some kind of connection to them. So, I’m pretty picky on who I cosplay, even though I would love to just be like ‘I’ll just buy that!’ and ‘I’ll cosplay them!’ just because their outfit’s cool.”
