Played by Pat Morita, Mr. Miyagi stood out in an age chalked full of Rambo macho man types. The new documentary More than Miyagi is an in depth look into the life and film career of Pat Morita.
Miyagi’s “Wax on Wax Off”
The character of Mr. Miyagi was the champion for the underdog. He taught balance in a world of chaos. Mr. Miyagi called upon his wisdom before using his fists to work out a problem. But who was the man behind Mr. Miyagi? Who was Pat Morita, and how did he become Mr. Miyagi? This film takes us on a journey to help the world better understand the man behind the legend.
The film is an open a curtain. It bids the audience to come in and get know Pat as his loved ones knew him. The film features both his triumphs and defeats, for both have a hand in shaping a person. The dedication and care to the memory of Pat will have you tears for a good portion of this film.
One word to describe this film would be “Love.” His wife, Eyelyn, gives us a glimpse into their home and his private life. The cast of Happy Days, Henry Winkler, Marion Ross, and Don Most, touch on Pat’s character, Arnold, and what his gift for humor brought to the show. Cast members from the The Karate Kid franchise, Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, and Martin Kove, shared some of the wisdom that “Uncle Pat” lovingly shared with them while on set. So much love by so many was sewn intricately into the fabric of this film. Even when talking about the hard, downright difficult chapters of Pat’s life, it was done in such a way that you could practically see the love leaping off of the screen.
The writers, Oscar Alvarez and Kevin Derek (also the director for the film), took the dark and vibrant moments of Pat’s life shared by his loved ones and painted with an expert and loving hand a beautiful picture of who Pat Morita was. He gave his heart and soul to every project he did, not just with Miyagi. He made us laugh, cry and cheer. Because of this film, I came to a realization: truly no other man could have ever filled the role of Mr. Miyagi. Pat Morita was a perfect fit for the role.

By the end, I felt like I knew the man behind Mr. Miyagi so much better. No matter if you know Pat as “The Hip Nip” Arnold from Happy Days or as Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid, I highly recommend this film. You definitely don’t want to miss this. It will capture your heart from the beginning and be with you long after the credits end. I give it a 10/10.
