Series four episode seven starts with Eleanor showing the gang a video she made to show the experiment subjects about their first year in the afterlife coming to an end. She said in that video that they should do “as many good deeds as possible before midnight just in case” because that definitely won’t seem suspiciously specific. Eleanor did notice that she gave away the entire experiment in that video though and smartly decided to remove it. That’s my smart cookie!
The gang has a last day party where they can give speeches about their time so far in the afterlife and their experiences in hopes that they’ll say nice things about each other to rank up some last-minute afterlife points. They wear lovely posh outfits while doing so! Simone looks absolutely gorgeous in her yellow dress.
Turns out, smarty pants Simone figured out that there’s something fishy about their afterlife. She’s been suspicious since day one and has been collecting evidence that she was right. She’s figured out that whatever is going on, is focused on them (Simone, Chidi, Brent, and John). John exposes that Jason isn’t really a monk in the panic and Jason introduces his real self to Simone. Tahani tries to throw Simone off but she doesn’t fall for it. Brent then starts talking about “the best place” (someone shut him up)
Simone and Chidi find Michael’s diary where he adorably writes songs. Is it physically possible to love Michael even more? Chidi also expresses that he hopes what Eleanor said about him and Simone being soulmates is true. By his wording though, I think he knows it isn’t. Chidi hoping that its true sounds like him trying to convince himself that what they have is real even though he feels in his heart that it’s not. Oh, and Simone finds the emoji board.
Eleanor and Michael panic that Simone is onto them but Michael comes up with a plan. His plan involves him becoming “The Magnificent Doctor Presto” (he’s so cute). Micheal and Janet have adorable magical sparkly outfits too! Michael’s magic trick “accidentally” drops Brent into a giant hole in the ground and he…threatens to sue. A moral question is bought up in the gang in whether they should help rescue Brent. Simone is not into that idea but Chidi is. Their disagreement causes them to break up. BYE SIMONE.
Chidi helps Brent or at least TRIES to. He fell in the hole too. Of course, he did. Eleanor still doesn’t give up on the experiment though with the remaining eight minutes. After getting rescued. Eleanor questions Chidi and Brent which opens a discussion between them where Chidi explains to Brent that he is not a very nice person, but not before Chidi realises that they’re in the Bad Place which emits a laugh parallel to Michael’s in series one but this time, Eleanor does the crazy laugh too, which is honestly my aesthetic. Brent ALMOST apologies, but then time on the experiment runs out, freezing them in place.
I thought that episode was incredibly emotional. Though I’m not a fan of Chidi and Simone’s pairing, it really was upsetting to see Chidi sad. Not only that but Brent actually almost apologising was great. It shows that even the worst people can improve. I really hope this moment proves to the judge that the experiment was a success. I’m very excited to see what the next episode holds.
