Bringing a beloved 1980s film into the modern era is no small feat. But for showrunner Celeste Hughey, the transition was an immediate fit. Hughey joined the project in the summer of 2022, seeing the original movie as perfect source material for a contemporary reimagining. Drawing inspiration from the cult classic starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher, this reimagining is led by Keke Palmer and a stellar ensemble cast.
The Keke Palmer Factor
From the very beginning, Hughey’s dream was to have Keke Palmer star in the series. Hughey wrote the lead role specifically with Palmer in mind. Aiming to create a character that matched the actress’s vast range. “She can do the comedy, she can do the drama. She’s so charming and just… you can’t stop watching her,” Hughey remarked. And so the character was designed to be complex, witty, and emotionally deep qualities that Hughey felt were worthy of Palmer’s talent.

Celeste Hughey on honoring the original
While the series seeks to find its own fresh life, Hughey was committed to maintaining iconic elements for fans of the original movie. The most notable inclusion is the infamous sardine scene in episode three. To ensure authenticity, Keke Palmer ate real sardines throughout the shoot. A commitment that Hughey noted left the entire set smelling like the snack.
A central theme of the new series is the importance of community. Hughey and her team focused on creating an eclectic group of found family. Where every character is unique and has their own moment to shine. The writers spent significant time developing what made each neighbor tick and how their individual secrets influenced their daily interactions. In addition, Hughey emphasized that while the situations are new and exciting, the stories remain authentic to the characters. Showing how they bounce off each other in the high-stakes environment of the suburbs.
All episodes of The ‘Burbs premiere on February 8, 2026, only on Peacock.
