The all-new animated series from Lucasfilm Animation, “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord,” continues to impress with how polished and thought-provoking the story has been. The series premiered on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. Set after the events of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” the series finds Maul plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who could be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit of revenge.
In this third episode in the aftermath of the young Twi’Lek Padawan Devon’s escape from her prison cell, the former Sith Lord continues to split his time between trying to recruit her as his new apprentice and making moves to shore up his standing on Janix, this time turning his attention toward another criminal organization that wronged him in the past: The Pyke Syndicate.
Friction Within the Janix Police & The Return of the Pyke Syndicate
Meanwhile, Brander Lawson’s struggles to ensure local authorities are the ones that bring Maul down are an excellent source of friction within the Janix Police. Vario has a particular knack for staying alive and useful, and it’s turned him into one of Star Wars’ most amusing characters. A betting man would’ve put money on him not making it out of the first two episodes, and now it’s looking like he’ll be around for the duration of the show itself, which is a welcome surprise because he adds much-needed humor to such a gritty and brutal story.

The fast-talking gangster now assists Maul’s faction by reaching out to the Pyke Syndicate’s leader, Marg Krim, another Clone Wars alum who makes his on-screen return in episode 3. The Pykes are wary of Vario ever since their last deal went bad, but eventually agree to another meet, which is just what Maul is hoping for.
A Duel of Philosophies
While the Pyke meeting is being set, Maul reaches out to Devon, who hasn’t yet been able to reunite with her own Jedi master Daki. An interesting back and forth of ideologies is exchanged between them, and while Devon maintains her opposition to Maul and stays her loyal to the Jedi Order’s principles, Maul’s criticisms of the Order clearly resonate with her, and for a brief and moment, she unlocks a deeper ferocity that momentarily puts Maul on the backfoot.

But the most intriguing moment came after their duel, where Maul has to take his lightsaber back from her before she leaves. The implication of a padawan who is already experiencing friction with the lessons of her current master, almost subconsciously taking a former Sith Lord’s lightsaber with her on her escape, cannot be ignored.
The Shadow of the Empire
Elsewhere, as the situation on Janix grows increasingly unstable, and the local authorities become overwhelmed and outmatched, there is pressure to involve the Empire in an attempt to curb the crime. Brander Lawson, out of desire to keep the Empire out of Janix affairs, bends the rules and does things under the table in his hunt for Maul, even as his friend and partner Two-Boots pushes for Imperial involvement. Their strainer relationship is a look into the dilemma that Janix’s entire police force is experiencing, and it serves as a microcosm for the galaxy’s main views on Imperial involvement in any part of their lives. The Empire (ostensibly) represents order and peace, and to an overworked Janix police officer who is getting shot at and attacked by a Force user with a laser sword, asking the Empire for help might feel like the only solution.

The lightsaber sequences remain absolute eye candy, and while the voice acting and animation are a tier above the rest, it is the storytelling that provides the show’s enduring staying power. Episode 3 presents two factions, each faced with its own dilemmas and crossroads. Devon continues to struggle between her former life, represented by her Master, and the path Maul has set before her. Meanwhile, Lawson and the Janix police face a conflict of their own: attempting to resolve matters independently or involving the Empire. Choice remains a central theme, and the decisions these characters make are setting everyone on a wild, emotional, and devastating course.
You can catch two episodes premiering each week on Disney+, with the final two airing on the ultimate Star Wars holiday, May the 4th.
