Critical Role has woven a tapestry of storytelling for over a decade set in Exandria spanning centuries. Calamity was an era that led to apocalyptic levels of devastation. It was finally explored in the “EXU: Calamity” trilogy. Fans have been ravenous for more since the first four-part campaign. Critical Role is very aware of fans’ love for Calamity.
The founders have been asked about a Calamity adaptation on multiple occasions. Other cast members, including Aabria Iyengar, and creators tied to Critical Role, including author Martin Cahill, have shared their own desire to further explore Calamity. Critical Role has played with it a bit on the publishing side with Liam O’Brien’s book, “Critical Role: Der Katzenprinz & Other Zemnian Tales” and “Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes.” It has also come into play in “The Legend of Vox Machina” and “The Mighty Nein” more than once.
In an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek, Arthur Loftis and Sung Jin Ahn share the fans’ love. Loftis, as a longtime fan, enthusiastically revealed his desire to explore this era via animation further. Ahn agreed with Loftis, revealing he wants to further explore Exandria overall.
“I Would Kill For A Chance To Make That”

Temple of Geek: One of the things that’s been so fun about the show is getting to see these flashbacks to the Calamity era. Seeing all that kind of come together, especially with the different art styles that we’ve seen with it. Is that something you guys would potentially like to explore further in the future?
Arthur Loftis:
Oh my God. Yes, please!
Sung Jin Ahn:
Yeah, I think for Arthur and I, we would like to explore anything more in the future. So yes, Amazon, please.
Arthur Loftis:
I guess I’ll say as a fan of Vox, the original campaign and all that stuff, Calamity was one of the coolest things they’d ever done at the table and I would kill for a chance to make that. So, I don’t know who needs to sign the check, but count me in.
“The Legend of Vox Machina” Team Are The Perfect Creatives To Bring Calamity To Animation

“The Legend of Vox Machina” is very intertwined with the Gods which has created opportunities to tie it to Calamity. With flashbacks of the Raven Queen’s last Champion, Zerxus, and even Easter eggs. Arthur Loftis revealed an Easter egg tied to Calamity in the most recent season. “And I believe there’s a Calamity Easter egg in the background of Udala’s office as well for the Eagle. It literally is an Eagle. It’s Travis’s bird character from Calamity.”
It could come to a head in the final season especially with the Whispered One’s long time plotting. His desire to ascend to Godhood and beyond. “The Legend of Vox Machina” team could be the perfect creatives to bring Calamity to life on screen. They have played in that era using different animation styles through flashbacks and memories. If Critical Role does decide to adapt the story into an animated mini-series or movie they have already laid the ground work through “The Legend of Vox Machina.”
All four seasons of “The Legend of Vox Machina” are available on Prime Video now.
