Day 3 Gallery: The Cosplay Community at Anime Expo

If you walked anywhere near the Los Angeles Convention Center today, you couldn’t miss the incredible cosplay from day 3 at Anime Expo. Saturday of Anime Expo (AX) is historically the best cosplay day of the four-day convention, and this year is no exception. Landing smack-dab on the 4th of July, the energy is completely electric. While the exhibit halls are packed and the panels are buzzing, the real beating heart of the convention is out in the open air, and in the lobby, that’s where you find the cosplayers.

What is Cosplay, Anyway?

For the uninitiated, cosplay, a mashup of the words “costume” and “play”, is so much more than just putting on a Halloween outfit. It is a highly specialized, deeply passionate performance art.

Cosplayers step into the shoes, armor, and elaborate wigs of their favorite characters from anime, manga, video games, and pop culture. It involves months of intense craftsmanship: sourcing fabrics, 3D-printing props, styling gravity-defying wigs, and engineering wearable mechanics. But the “play” part is just as crucial.

The Pure Joy of the Con Floor

If you ask any cosplayer, the joy comes down to Community. Anime can sometimes feel like a solitary hobby because you sit at home and watch a series on your screen. At Anime Expo, that isolation completely evaporates. All day long, fan-organized meetups take over the outside plazas. You’ll see 50 people dressed from the same niche video game screaming the theme song together, hugging strangers, and exchanging social media handles.

AX sets up massive, dedicated Cosplay Photo Sets over at the Entertainment Arena. Cosplayers get to pose inside professionally constructed miniature environments, from traditional Japanese tatami rooms to futuristic sci-fi hallways—giving them the perfect backdrop to capture their hard work. Cosplay at AX isn’t always serious business. As the sun sets on Day 3 and the convention moves toward the legendary late-night afterparties and concerts, one thing is abundantly clear: cosplay isn’t just a feature of Anime Expo. Cosplay is Anime Expo.
