First Look at Vendetta, Riftbound’s Fourth Expansion

Riftbound, the League of Legends trading card game from Riot Games, is about to see the release of its fourth expansion. Titled Vendetta, you can get your hands on the new cards July 31. True to its name, its new Legend cards and mechanics are based around famous rivalries from throughout LoL’s long history. Mel and Ambessa, Zed and Shen, Viktor and Jayce, these iconic vendettas are part of these characters’ cores. But as a TCG expansion, Vendetta also offers a host of new playable cards and mechanics to shake things up.

This set, however, is also a milestone expansion in Riftbound’s short history. Not only is it the first batch of new cards to reach release parity around the world, but it’s the first time we’re seeing the three enemy Domain combinations since the game came out last Fall. So that means we’re getting Legends designed around Calm/ Fury, Mind/ Body, and Chaos/ Order. Kicking off Vendetta spoilers, which run until July 18, was a developer dive video straight from the source. Riftbound Executive Producer Chengran Chai and Game Director Dave Guskin showed off a handful of new cards, which you can see below.

New Mechanics

Vendetta is introducing three new mechanics to Riftbound, offering up significantly more varied playstyles when combined with the previous three releases.

  • Flow: Cards with this ability allow you to play them from your trash instead of your hand, often with a different Energy/ Power cost.
  • Burn: If you’re familiar with Magic: The Gathering, Burn is the same concept as “milling” a card. Cards with the Burn ability send cards from the top of your deck directly into your trash, synergizing nicely with Flow.
  • Empower: By activating a card’s Empower cost, they’ll gain powerful new abilities. Some cards allow you to remove the Empower ability by activating another cost for a powerful effect, opening up the chance to Empower again on a later turn.

We’re also seeing a new card type, Unit-Gear. This is a single card that counts as both a Unit and Gear type. Then there are the Decree spells, a cycle of spells designed around the Domain rivalries that target their respective enemy color.

Collectbility

Aside from regular printings of cards, Vendetta continues the trend of rare Overnumbered and Signature versions of certain cards. Each of the set’s 9 new Legends will receive alternate art Overnumbered versions. It also adds 22 Rival Overnumbers, dual-art cards featuring some of the most iconic rivalries from the League of Legends lore.

Vendetta introduces the new Crystal Rose alternate art versions of new and preexisting cards. This brings the Wild Rifts line of skins into Riftbound for the first time.

Finally, Guskin and Chai showed off two of the new Legends’ card art. Zed, Master of Shadows (Fury/ Chaos) and Shen, Eye of Twilight (Calm/ Order), who are also the two decks represented in Vendetta’s new Showdown Deck product. We also saw some of the new tokens and visual representation cards, as well as a look at the new battlefield, Risen Altar.
