The acclaimed director of the Wonder Woman film franchise, Patty Jenkins, will direct the next Star Wars film to take the big screen. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will arrive in theaters on Christmas 2023.
The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy. Rogue Squadron is based on the Star Wars video game franchise of the same name. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was an arcade-style flight action game co-developed by Factor 5 and LucasArts. The games have also been made into novels.
Filming has not begun on the film yet. Due to the filming restriction in place because of the coronavirus pandemic, it is not certain when filming can begin. Patty Jenkins released a video on her social media describing her excitement and the personal importance of this film.
Jenkin’s Announcement
In the video, Jenkins is rollerblading on an airport runway near a hanger. Jenkins skates towards a car as she talks to the audience. When she arrives at the car, she sits on the trunk as she puts away rollerblades and puts on a flight suit and a Star Wars pilot helmet similar to the one Luke Skywalker wore when he piloted his X-Wing. She then begins walking on an airport runway towards a hanger where an X-Wing is ready and parked outside.

“I love to move fast and speed of any kind. I think that that’s because I grew up the daughter of a great fighter pilot. And every day I wake up and go outside and look up and see my father and his squadron taking off in their F4s roaring across the sky. And it was the most thrilling thing, still, I’ve experienced in my entire life. So when he lost his life in service to his country, it ignited a desire to me to turn all of that tragedy and thrill into one-day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time. But try as I might and look as I did I couldn’t find the right story. Ever. I kept looking and looking but I just couldn’t find the right one. Until now. Now I found a movie about two things I love.”
