Spoiler warning for The Expanse #1
The Expanse universe is a vast one, so far including not only five seasons of an exciting TV show, but also eight incredible books that take viewers and readers on many adventures through the solar system and beyond. Apart from a tabletop roleplaying game, fans of the TV show and books have also been able to dive deeper into the world of The Expanse by exploring the Origins comic series. Now, with the start of the fifth season, another adventure awaits and, once again, it arrives in the format of a comic.
With the start of the fifth season, BOOM! Studios also released the first issue of a brand-new Expanse comic which builds a bridge between seasons four and five and centers around Bobbie Draper. But before we take a look at the new comic itself, let’s recap: After the events of the third season and the opening of the ring gates, Bobbie is discharged from the military and returns to Mars as a civilian, feeling lost and hopeless. With more and more people fleeing the planet to pursue a life on already habitable worlds, Mars is slowly dying – and so is Bobbie’s devotion to Mars as she falls in with a criminal group that sells Martian weapons to whoever wants to buy.
The Expanse #1 from BOOM! Studios
The BOOM! Studios comic series, written by Corinna Bechko, picks up almost exactly where the show left off at the end of the fourth season: With Bobbie still operating in the weapons business – only this time, she doesn’t do it for her nephew or personal gain. She does it for Chrisjen Avasarala with the purpose of finding out who in the Martian military is responsible for selling weapons so powerful that they have the ability to destroy planets. Not only is the idea of a Bobbie Draper adventure a marvelous one for many fans, but it is also equally exciting to see Bobbie and Avasarala team up again and the new Expanse comic executes this in a near-perfect manner.
The first issue throws the reader right into the middle of the action, with Avasarala and Bobbie noticing that something is happening on both Luna and Mars, something that isn’t quite right. When Bobbie begins to investigate, she soon figures out that, whatever is happening, it is something big – and it involves an ominous offer made to one of her contacts. Bobbie, too, receives an offer of some sort from someone that she knows from her military days.
What fans will enjoy
For readers of The Expanse books, Bobbie’s investigation in the comics (as well as in season five) brings up a number of exciting and hints about what is yet to come and those readers will gleefully accept the subtle foreshadowing, already knowing what will eventually happen. For TV show fans, the BOOM! Studios comics are a wonderful bridge and shed some light on what happened between the last season and the current one. For this audience, the little clues hidden in the latest comic will only add to the excitement of slowly uncovering what is going on in the solar system.
Whether you’re a die-hard comic book fan or just a casual reader loving The Expanse, the BOOM! Studios comic is something for everyone and delivers additional content involving two of the most loved Expanse characters: Bobbie Draper and Chrisjen Avasarala. The remaining three issues will certainly bring about a lot more action and even more character insight.
