After leaving fans speculating for days if The Book of Boba Fett was a spin-off series or a new chapter in The Mandalorian series, we have an official answer. “The Book of Boba Fett” spin-off television series is coming to Disney+.

This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian Season 2

On their social media account, Star Wars said “The Book of Boba Fett, a new Original Series, starring Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen and executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez, set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, is coming to @DisneyPlus Dec. 2021.”

On Friday’s season finale of The Mandalorian, it was revealed in an end credit scene that the Book of Boba Fett was coming to Disney+. It was a quick scene where Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) return to Jabba the Hutt’s old hang out. They kill the Jabba’s successor, Bib Fortuna, and take Jabba’s throne for themselves.

The only information given was a text screen that said The Book Of Boba coming in 2021. This left fans speculating whether or not it was a new spin-off series, a movie or if Boba Fett would replace the main character of The Mandalorian. On December 10th, the Walt Disney Company’s announced that over the next few years, Disney+ plans to release approximately 10 Star Wars series. This is in addition to the premium content set to premiere in theatres or on linear channels before coming to the streaming service. The Book of Boba Fett was not listed among those series. Leading some fans to believe that the Din Djarin and Grogu storyline was now over and that Boba Fett would continue on as the lead in The Mandalorian series.

Boba Fett

Boba Fett was one of the most dangerous and feared bounty hunters in the galaxy. He makes his first small appearance in Star Wars: A New Hope as the muscle for crime boss Jabba the Hut. He returned in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi as a bounty hunter looking to collect a reward on Han Solo’s head by returning him to Jaba the Hutt. Boba Fett was originally portrayed by Jeremy Bulloch who passed away on Thursday, December 17.

In Star Wars: Attack of the Clones we get to see some of Boba Fett’s origin story. There we find out that Boba Fett is an unaltered clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison), who had him created on Kamino to be raised as his son as part of his price to serve as the template for the Grand Army of the Republic’s clone troopers. This is why Temuera Morrison has been cast as Boba Fett in the Mandalorian series and now in the Book of Boba Fett. If Boba Fett is Jango Fetts clone, then it makes sense that he would play the older Boba Fett now. This makes for very awkward encounters, as all clone troopers would look identical to him.

The character of Boba Fett has made many appearances and has been mentioned in Star Wars films, television series, video games, comic books, and novel adaptations. There is plenty of lore surrounding Boba Fett and plenty of material for the creators of The Book of Boba Fett to draw from. Given the success of The Mandalorian to bridge new stories with old nostalgia, we are definitely looking forward to this spin-off series.
